Human
Basic Information
Anatomy
Humans contain a vestigial tail, appendix, flexible shoulder joints, grasping fingers, and opposable thumbs. Humans also have a more barrel-shaped chests in contrast to the funnel shape of other apes, an adaptation for bipedal respiration. Humans are bipedal, a trait that is often a point of reference for other species of similar anatomy, and share a similar brain size to other intelligent mortal races. They have all five senses which include smell, taste, touch, hearing, and vision. Unlike most other mortal races, humans are not well adjusted to darkness and cannot see as well, though their vision in the daylight is superior to most other races. While humans have a density of hair follicles comparable to Therianthropes, it is predominantly vellus hair, most of which is so short and wispy as to be practically invisible. Humans have about 2 million sweat glands spread over their entire bodies.
It is estimated that the worldwide average height for an adult human male is about 171 cm (5 ft 7 in), while the worldwide average height for adult human females is about 159 cm (5 ft 3 in). Shrinkage of stature may begin in middle age in some individuals but tends to be typical in the extremely aged. The average mass of an adult human is 59 kg (130 lb) for females and 77 kg (170 lb) for males. Like many other conditions, body weight and body type are influenced by both genetic susceptibility and environment and varies greatly among individuals, though advancement in arcane magics and other arcane modifications have led to some humans to develop mutations.
As opposed to other races, especially Elves, humans are excellent long-distance runners and the heart has a higher stroke volume and cardiac output than even Therianthropes, though they are much slower at short distances.
Genetics and Reproduction
Humans, much like other mortal races, are dioecious, having two distinct sexes in which individual humans are either male that produce male gametes, or female that produce female gametes. Females contain egg cells that, when fertilized with male gametes, will prodce offspring in the womb. When the female is impregnated, the gestation period is typically around 27 tendays, or about 9 months, which is similar to most other mortal races.
Growth Rate & Stages
At birth, humans are known as "newborns" and remain as such until either 28 days or even up to three months. After such, they are referred to as "babies" or "infants" and learn motor skills. At 1 year into life, babies are now referred to as "toddlers" and begin to learn speech and pattern recognition. After their third year, they are referred to simply as a "child" until they reach around 12 years old when puberty begins. As adolescents, the body grows exponentially, and as puberty progresses into their teenage years, they become more nerotic and prone to making emotional decisions rather than logical ones.
At 15, most humans are considered adults for the purposes of finding an occupation or graduating from apprenticehood, but humans are considered sexually mature at 18 years, and mentally mature at 25 years. This is opposed to other races like Elves, who consider their 100th year as adulthood, and Dwarves, who see age 40 and 50 as maturing into adulthood. However, most humanoid mortal races are physically mature at around their twenties.
Ecology and Habitats
Humans are as varied as the stars above. Their is no optimal habitat for humans as they are capable of thriving in any environment not outright deadly to them. From frozen tundras to blazing hot deserts, humans can be found living in settlements of varied sizes. Humans are a very social species and can be seen forming feudalist sociteties to wandering nomadic tribes and caravans. Humans are also capable of living in anarchical societies, and rebellions are commonplace. Despite their adaptability, most humans would prefer either tropical climates or temperate climates, but a human individual's desire for certain climates is typically highly influenced by climates they were raised in during childhood.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Humans are omnivores and are capable of eating both plants and animals, including marine life. Some cultures prefer a vegetarian diet, while others prefer a more carnivorous one. Because of their adaptability, humans either assign themselves to be hunters and gatherers, or farmers. They are just as likely to hunt animals for their meat than they are to grow crops on fertile land. However, humans do require a varied diet, which can lead to complications when finances and social status prevent some humans from eating varied foods.
Behaviour
Humans are incredibly diverse in their psychology, so much so that no two humans are the same in the way they think. A human you meet on the road is just as likely to stab you and take your belongings as to simply delight in idle parley. Some humans can be chaotic evil, while others are lawful good. A human's behavior is heavily influienced by their environment and the way they were raised. They are often leaders of radical cult groups and can also be heroes of legend. Because humans can be found everywhere and are so diverse in their behavior, other mortal races find humans dangerous and typically prefer to seperate humans into their cultural and ethnic groups, as members of those groups tend to think more alike and thus, more predictable.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Humans have a diverse system of social status, with some cultures forgoing status altogether. However, the primary structure is feudalism, in which members of an administrative society are divided by social status. The majority of the population in these nations are of the lower class, known as "peasants", while members of higher classes are known as the Nobility. Those at the top are Royalty, with the King (or Queen in some cases) at the very top and is the ultimate authority. These nations are known as "Kingdoms" and their territory is divided by the King and distributed to members of the Nobility.
The Duke is the highest title of Nobility and often own large swaths of land called "dutchies". A Count is under a Duke and owns land called a "county". Counties on the border of a Kingdom are often more important than those on the inside. These border counties are called "marches" and a Count of a march is called a "Marquess," which is higher than a Count and just under a Duke in status. Under the Count are the Barons who own baronies and are considered the lowest title of nobility, though they are the second most numerous, just under Counts.
Often times, the leader of a county's judiciary division is counted among the Nobility and work under the Count as a sort of "vice-Count." These Nobles are called "Viscounts" and typically do not own land, but due to their importance in the territories of Counts and Marquesses, they are placed above Barons but just below Counts. In a similar vein, the common men who have distinguished themselves enough before the crown but not enough to gain a title are honorary Nobles, and their official title is "baronet." They are sometimes afforded fiefs of their own, but they are typically aristocrats under the jurisdiction of Barons or Knights.
While Knights are under the Nobility in status, they are still above the common man, meaning they can be afforded small fields of land. These are called "fiefs" and often have villages under their rule, though Barons would often rule over these fiefs as well. Fiefs can either be afforded by the Crown himself, but are more commonly afforded to them by the Baron who owns the land in exchange for their military service. The knights under a Baron are then provided to the Crown during times of large-scale conflict and war.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Humans are typically used as a reference point for perception and sensory capabilities. Humans lack darkvision and are not as adept at hearing as Therianthropes. However, humans are exceptionally adaptable and are capable of using the environment to supplement these weaknesses. Humans are also excellent vessels for spellcasting, though they are not as capable of weilding as the Elves. Instead, humans use their more limited capabilities in natural magic to augment their normal sensory capabilities and perception, though not as effectively as wizards and sorcerers.
