Settlers

The term Settlers may also refer to:

The Settlers

Settlers are an ethnic group from Harkom. The term originally refers to the 134 survivors of the Stranding , which marks the beginning of the modern time reckoning in Teel. After the foundation of the Free City of Teel, the term was generalized and used for every member of the modern community.

1. Origins

The ascendants from the Settlers came from Harkom, a wasteland in the far East of the Infinite Sands. Their ship (the Sun) was wrecked by the first Indi Hit Wave of the new calendar. After several unsuccessful attempts to set sail on the rough Ago Sea, the Settlers were granted their own land in the West of the sparsely populated peninsula. The Free City of Teel was established in Wave 34/12 AS and soon became the socio-cultural center of the modern lifestyle the Settlers brought with them.

2. Classification

Neither the live survivors of the Stranding, nor their descendants or the offspring from partnerships between people with Juru and Settler background have the ability to obtain immortality. Nevertheless, the average expectancy of life is much longer than it was for the people back in Harkom.

3. History in Harkom

1310 Settlers set sail in Harkom in the year 830 (Harkom time), 244 days before the fleet crashed in the Infinite Sands. Their destination was unclear at that point, because the mission was seen as the last chance for survival by most of the later Settlers.

3.1 The Exodus

Only a very small amount of the original Harkom population had the courage and the resources to build ships for the Sun fleet. 66 caravels had been built besides the leading bark ship. They were seen as rebels, though there was no governmental effort to oppress the mass exodus. Several catalysts had caused the migration into the great unknown:     Rough Climate
The old stories of Harkom describe the land as a dry Tundra where the agricultural economy was not easy to manage. Over the last centuries, the Infinite Sands increased and the northwest of the country was completely deserted. It is believed that the country is inhabitable by now.     Overpopulation
Harkom was densely populated when the sun fleet set sail . The strictly vegetarian culture started to shift towards an omnivorous food culture when the hunger took over, which was inacceptable for the Sun fleet group. They took as many domesticated animals as they could and fled the country.

3.2 Previous Attempts to leave Harkom

There were at least four great missions with the aim to find a new home for the Harkom population before the Sun fleet departed. All of them failed: The exploration flotillas were torn apart by the strong waves of the Ago Sea. These tragic events raised uncertainty and fear in Harkom: Though the people knew that the Sun fleet might be their last chance to find a place to live, they didn't dare to accede to such a dangerous mission with an uncertain outcome.
