The Theocratic Turn

Religious event

1566 AM

The conclusion of the Great Civil War brought about an era of uncertainty and devastation in Riverhold. Amid the ruins of the once thriving kingdom, a new power emerged from the shadows, exploiting the political instability. The Church, which had remained a relatively insignificant institution since the Black Decay, seized this moment to catapult itself to prominence.

In the aftermath of the war, The Church went on the offensive, denouncing the use of magic and blaming the royal court's reliance on it for the kingdom's ruinous state. The clerics, through fiery sermons, preached endless damnation for those who dabbled in magical arts, associating it with chaos, destruction, and the recent calamities.   Their words found receptive ears among the beleaguered populace, who were desperate for stability and guidance. The Holy Dominion of Daghda gained a significant following in major cities and even the countryside. Using this newfound support, they declared magic heretical, leading to its prohibition. In a swift and ruthless move, they overthrew the weakened monarchy, thus establishing a theocracy in Riverhold.   For those who possessed magical abilities, this change was a nightmare. They were branded as heretics, hunted, and forced to either renounce their abilities, flee or face death. The atmosphere turned hostile, with mistrust and fear taking root in communities, driving magical practitioners into hiding.   Previous event
