Banshee (BAN-shee)

Banshees appear as luminous, wispy forms that vaguely recall their mortal features. A banshee’s face is wreathed in a wild tangle of hair, its body clad in wispy rags that flutter and stream around it. There exists two specific types; a benevolent one that wails in the night as a warning when someone is about to die, and a malevolent one that uses their supernatural screaming to drive humans insane and bash their own heads in. Once the human is dead, the malevolent banshees then feed on their corpse.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Banshees appear as luminous, wispy forms that vaguely recall their mortal features. Their faces are wreathed in wild tangles of hair, and their bodies are clad in fluttering, tattered rags. Despite their ghostly appearance, banshees can evoke a sense of beauty mixed with terror.

Genetics and Reproduction

Banshees do not reproduce. They are created from the souls of women who misused their beauty in life, transforming into these undead entities upon death. The transformation is a result of a curse, and the process cannot be reversed.

Ecology and Habitats

Banshees are bound to the place where they died and cannot venture more than five miles from there. They are nocturnal creatures, hunting only at night. They are often found in abandoned buildings, ruins, forests, or other secluded areas.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Malevolent banshees feed on the corpses of their victims after driving them to madness and death with their supernatural screams. Benevolent banshees, on the other hand, do not feed on the dead but act as harbingers, warning of impending doom.

Biological Cycle

Banshees are affected by the lunar cycle, becoming more active and powerful during the full moon of Umbral. Their cries and wails are also more potent during this time.

Behaviour

Banshees are deeply troubled spirits, reliving every moment of their life with perfect recall, yet refusing to accept responsibility for their doom. They prey on the vulnerable, both physically and emotionally. While benevolent banshees wail as a warning, malevolent banshees use their screams to drive humans insane.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The wail of a banshee is often sought after by necromancers and dark sorcerers for its power. However, the risks of capturing or dealing with a banshee often outweigh the benefits. Their remains, if exorcised, can be used in powerful rituals and potions.

Average Intelligence

Banshees retain the intelligence they had in life, often heightened by their supernatural state. They are cunning and strategic in their haunting.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Banshees have heightened senses and are particularly sensitive to the emotional states of their victims. They are able to sense vulnerability and despair, which they use to their advantage when hunting. They abhor mirrored surfaces, as seeing their own reflection can send them into a rage.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Banshees are solitary entities and do not have symbiotic relationships. However, they can influence other spirits and creatures of the night, often attracting lesser undead to their presence.

Civilization and Culture

Common Myths and Legends

Legends often speak of the banshee's wail as a harbinger of death. Stories differ on whether the banshee is malevolent or benevolent, but all agree on the terrifying nature of their cry. Some tales speak of banshees who were once great beauties, cursed for their vanity and cruelty.
A banshee, also called a beann'shie, is a female spirit who cries at night, wailing a warning of those who will die. Banshees are not specifically malicious spirits, though meeting one is considered to be an omen of the worst kind.
