Eliza Haverford

Eliza Haverford, Professor

Eliza Haverford was born in 1855 to an aristocratic family in the fog-laden city of Greythorne, a bustling metropolis known for its towering steampunk contraptions and academia.

While the Haverfords were respected for their wealth, Eliza’s father, Lord Percival Haverford, was a scholar of the unknown and an archaeologist who scoured the world for relics and cryptids. Her childhood was steeped in tales of lost civilizations and creatures that defied scientific explanation, leaving Eliza yearning for adventure beyond the mundane.

At 17, after her father vanished during an expedition in search of the fabled Serpent of Uradhu, an ancient god-beast said to lurk deep within the Sarratu Jungle, Eliza set off on her first expedition.

She aimed to find her father and the cryptid he had been searching for. In the heart of the Sarratu, a place filled with venomous flora and shifting landscapes, she discovered remnants of the creature her father had sought… an immense, spectral serpent whose scales seemed to exist between dimensions.

Though she failed to find her father, the discovery solidified her desire to explore cryptids across the planes.

Reputation and Rise to Prominence

Eliza quickly became known as an unconventional figure in Greythorne society, and rumors of her dangerous expeditions spread throughout scholarly circles.   Unlike her peers who focused on cataloging earthly fauna, Eliza turned her gaze toward creatures that walked the borders of reality. Her bold, fearless nature allowed her to venture into forgotten lands and ancient ruins, places no other dared go.   Over the years, her quests took her far from Greythorne's safety and into places that defied rational comprehension. As she delved deeper into forgotten texts (some bound in human skin, others written in languages long lost to time), Eliza began to discover pathways to other dimensions and hidden planes where creatures beyond imagination thrived.

Adventures Beyond the Mortal Plane

The Veiled Marsh of Zatharra:

Eliza’s first otherworldly journey led her to the Veiled Marsh of Zatharra, an enigmatic swamp hidden on a distant continent. It is said to be the remnants of a cursed city that was swallowed by its own magic.   Here, she encountered the Morathas, massive, amphibious creatures whose bodies appear woven from mist and bone strands. These beings were not only sentient but capable of twisting the reality around them.   Eliza’s detailed illustrations and notes on their behavior established her as one of the foremost cryptozoologists of her era.

The Infinite Chasm of Karthun:

Seeking to push the limits of her exploration, Eliza ventured to the Infinite Chasm of Karthun, a bottomless rift in the northern reaches of the Velathi Wastes.   The chasm is said to lead to a layer of existence where nightmares take physical form. During her perilous descent into its black depths, Eliza encountered the Huldranox, a creature with a shape-shifting exoskeleton that fed on its victim’s fear.   Each time she gazed at the beast, it morphed into something new… a manifestation of her deepest anxieties. Eliza returned with detailed accounts of this terror beast despite nearly losing her sanity.

The Shifting City of Ithrakel:

In her search for the city of Ithrakel, a legendary metropolis said to shift through time and space, Eliza was transported to a plane where time operated in loops and reality fragmented into ever-changing mosaics.   Ithrakel was inhabited by beings known as The Displacers, creatures that appeared humanoid but constantly flickered between moments of time, their faces obscured by shimmering veils.   Here, Eliza experienced the true madness of time, a place where her very identity began to dissolve and reform with each passing moment.   Her journals from this expedition are fragmented, filled with cryptic sentences and illustrations that seem to change upon repeated viewings.

The Void-Hollows of Athexus:

A journey to the Void-Hollows of Athexus, an ancient, forgotten realm rumored to be the remnants of a fallen celestial empire, brought Eliza face-to-face with beings that defied even her prodigious imagination.   The Atrumens, massive, leviathan-like creatures, floated through the hollowed remains of long-dead stars, feeding on the lingering energy of the cosmos.   Eliza documented their behavior meticulously, marveling at how these astral beings drifted effortlessly between dimensions, occasionally pulling fragments of reality into their wake.   The void around them hummed with eldritch energy, making prolonged exposure dangerous, but Eliza’s unshakable determination allowed her to return with knowledge no one else had gained.

The Twilight Forest of Eryndara

Among the most enchanting yet perilous places she explored was the Twilight Forest of Eryndara, a shimmering woodland that exists between life and death. Bathed in eternal twilight, the trees whisper forgotten truths while the Sylvan Lurkers (shadowy, fey-like creatures) stalk the paths, their golden eyes gleaming through the mist.   Eliza’s cautious diplomacy with the trickster spirits of the forest allowed her to document these elusive creatures, learning of their shifting, chimeric forms and their ability to weave illusions so powerful that they become a reality for the beholder.   Here, Eliza learned the art of trickery and the importance of paying close attention to the unseen.

Current Endeavor: The Cryptozoological Journals

Now, at 35, Eliza has returned to her home in Greythorne, at least temporarily, though many suspect her mind remains scattered across the infinite worlds she has explored. She is currently dedicating herself to completing a massive collection of journals, a magnum opus documenting her encounters with cryptids from every known (and unknown) realm.   The Cryptozoological Journals of Eliza Haverford are meticulously organized by realm, with each chapter featuring vivid, hand-drawn illustrations, maps, and detailed descriptions of the creatures she has encountered.   These journals have begun to circulate among the most secretive scholarly societies, with rumors of her documenting cryptids and pathways to other dimensions, magical secrets, and arcane knowledge long thought lost.   The journals have caused a stir in academia, with some calling her a madwoman while others regard her as the greatest cryptozoologist of all time.

Personality and Philosophy

Eliza is fiercely independent, stubborn, and driven by an insatiable hunger for knowledge. While other women of her status were expected to marry and tend to domestic matters, Eliza defied every expectation.   She is not without warmth or empathy, but her obsession with uncovering the truth about the creatures she hunts often overrides social conventions.   Despite the many dangers she has faced, Eliza has a certain detached bravado due to seeing things that would have driven most to madness.   Her ultimate goal is more than the pursuit of knowledge; it is a search for meaning in a universe filled with incomprehensible entities. Her father's disappearance continues to weigh heavily on her, and while she denies it publicly, her relentless quest for cryptids may be an effort to uncover the truth behind his fate.

Legacy and Influence

Though only 35, Eliza Haverford has already reshaped the field of cryptozoology. Her discoveries, particularly those in planes beyond the material, have sparked new interest in studying the arcane and the esoteric.   She has inspired a new generation of adventurers, scholars, and dreamers, but Eliza remains cautious, knowing firsthand the dangers that lurk within the unknown realms.   Once completed, her journals will become the definitive guide to creatures from across the planes of existence, blending meticulous science with the ethereal and magical.   Professor Eliza Haverford is and will remain, a pioneer at the very edge of the known world… whether in the darkest jungles or the furthest reaches of the astral seas.
