Voldinstead
Voldinstead is a fortress city in the northeast corner of The Duchy of Beric. It serves as a bastion against orcish incursion into the region, and protects a number of very lucrative mines nearby.
The city itself is located almost entirely on the top of a broad mesa, with several giant platform elevators on iron rack and pinion drives to lift people up and down. This arrangement keeps the city almost entirely unassailable from below, and offers it an unmatched view over the surrounding landscape.
Supplied by many nearby mines, the city's aesthetic generally takes the refined adobe construction typical of Beric structures and lines it in heavy iron struts and supports.
Districts
Lacking a stratified district structure, the crowded mesa-top city is instead divided between its military and civilian sides.
Military
The military district consists of a large barracks complex for the city's garrison, and a number of hardpoints along the edge of the mesa with seige weaponry. The military district also protects the granary and cistern that supply the city when under seige. Notably, the military district completely lacks any sort of castle fortifications, as the towering mesa itself is considered superior to any walls men could build.Civilian
The civilian district holds the city's ironworks and blacksmithing industry, a guild house for the Rock and Pick, the ruling Count's manor, and a few fancy cliffside cafes.
