Sorcerers Rock (institution)

Sorcerers Rock is an accademy of magic, created to house and train all young mages in the Empire. It was created by order of the empress Julia Pagitax II in 378 AC.   Sorcerers Rock teaches the four elemental schools of magic along with illusion, transformation and summoning. Recent knowledge aquired from the Jewelled Kingdoms has also initiated studies into Arcane magic. It does not teach necromancy, blood magic, shadow magic or mind control.   Sorcerers Rock is named after the island where the academy is situated, a short distance from Arvenna in the Devils Fist Ocean.   Following the attack on Sorcerers Rock by the dragon Malbothrax the surviving mages have been divided between Arvenna and Cardenna.

Structure

Sorcerers Rock is ruled by an Archchancellor who is advised by a council of the seven heads of the seven schoools of magic, the Primus Artifex (head of enchanting) and Master Alchemist. Although in theory the Archchancellor is the supreme authority, rarely has anyone holding this office overulled the judgement of his council.   Sorcerers Rock has traditonally been seperated into seven schools of magic, and mages are broadly grouped by the school at which they excel, although they will almost certainly study more than one field of magic. Other fields of study such as Alchemy, Enchanting, occult research and history are seen as auxiliary to the schools main function but still clearly within the mages auspices. There are also a number of special instructors who teach the application of magic in battle, and pick out likely candidates to pass on when they graduate.   Students must pass theoretical and pratical exams to be deemed mages in their own right rather than students. Once they have passed they may either leave Sorcerers Rock to make their own way in the world, or remain to conduct research or teach others.

Culture

By isolating mages on an island they are held apart from the rest of society. This adds something to the mystique of mages, although perhaps leaves them a little unwordly.   Sorcerers Rock does not train women and there are no women at the institution, inddeed, there is a strong cultural bias towards mages remaining celibate. This is to prevent the generation of increasingly strong "mage bloodlines" such as in Raskan, leading to extremely powerful mages subjugating the rest of society.   Because mages are housed, fed and trained by the empire it is expected that they will repay this by serving the empire as and when requested to do so.

Public Agenda

To train mages for their own safety and that of society. To propgate and further the knowledge of magic and its practical use. To support the empire when required. To combat and supress the spread of dark magics such as necromancy, blood magic, shadow magic and mind control.

Assets

The island of Sorcerers Rock, a vast library of magical tomes, laboratories, alchemy and echanting supplies, all now incidnerate and buried under piles of rubble.

History

Sorcerers Rock was created by order of the empress Julia Pagitax II in the aftermath of the first Dark Elf invasion, in order to concentrate the knowledge that might be required to fight off the dark elves should they ever return.   In 554 AC Sorcerers Rock was attacked by the dragon Malbothrax, who laid waste to the accademy before being driven off.
