Lianna Chandrelle
Lianna Chandrelle
Lianna Chandrelle is one of the many athropomorphized object children of Eustorgius Polycarp, the Transmuter of Gulderry. She was created from a candlestick via the anthropomorphosis process.
A 'Generation I' animant, Chandrelle is regarded by most of her fellow animants as a respected older sister. However, her popularity doesn't extend far beyond the walls of the Transmuter's Estate because, as an intellectual, most of the humble folk of Gulderry don't consider her as feminine as her coeval sisters Thraea and Viola. In fact, ever-haughty Viola often chides Chandrelle in small ways for being insufficiently lady-like in her demeanor or pursuits. Chandrelle, for her part, has decided to strike out on her own in the hopes that she can earn more respect through her talents - perhaps even joining the membership of the Winder's Guild.
Physical Description
Special abilities
Chandrelle is intimately familiar with all sorts of waxwork, from making candles to the crafting of meticulously-detailed wax figures in a variety of sizes. She has poured over the literature concerning the creation and summoning of clockwork automatons in her father's library and puts this knowledge to use to bring her waxen creations to a semblance of life. Chandrelle's automatons are unique in that, from a distance, they are very difficult to discern from actual living creatures; the waxen skin, often warmed and rendered flexible by the inner machinery of the automaton, can even flex in believably fleshy ways. Moreover, though she is not as competent with illusion magic as some of her peers, she suses it to enhance the verisimilitude of her constructs even further. Chandrelle's skills as a mechanic make her one of the few non-Winders on Gulderry capable of calling forth clockwork automatons of her own creation rather than from a state-sponsored Hall of Archetypes.
In addition to her ability to conjure automatons, Chandrelle is also capable of calling forth and shaping volumes of wax using the power of arcana. Though she typically uses this for her crafting work, she is also capable of calling forth wax so that it surrounds her body and hardens, providing her with a layer of protection against heat, impacts, and harsh alchemical reagents. She has control over the temperature and composition of the wax when she conjures it, with the result that sometimes the hot vapors coming off the bolus can prove noxious to bystanders.
Specialized Equipment
As the fire safety officer of the estate and resident tender of fires and lights, Chandrelle is never seen without a wrought iron fire poker slung across her back and a set of waxworking tools in a pouch at her side.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Chandrelle is self-conscious about her body. This self-consciousness is both a product of - and the unspoken cause for - a bit of teasing on the part of her animant siblings at residence in the Transmuter's Estate. Off-color rumors around the Estate, often spread by Viola, persist that she enhances her figure with conjured wax when no one is looking.
This teasing has had a profound effect on Chandrelle's self-image. Though quiet by nature, she responds by trying to flaunt her crafting talents as a way to distract from what she sees as her least desirable feature - especially when eligible batchelors visit the estate or are encountered about town. This has the opposite effect to what she desires, however, as she is somewhat awkward in social situations, making her show of talents look more like arrogance. The young men of Gulderry also sometimes feel threatened by her high competence at the traditionally 'manly' crafting pursuits, but she will not give them up, as her skill at creating lifelike clockworks is one of her only sources of pride.
The fact that Bushell and Thraea draw the eyes of would-be male suitors with apparent ease, while she struggles, has filled Chandrelle with jealousy. This threatens to create a rift between Chandrelle and her siblings, and, as time goes on, Chandrelle has increasingly debated the merits of remaining in Gulderry. She is, however, the only one in the household unaware that her older sisters take her out of the house precisely because they recognize that she deserves a break from the negativity of her peers and should be able to find people who will respect her for who and what she is.
Encountering Chandrelle
When the players find her, Chandrelle has decided to go with Salleus in in his quest to separate the animants from the family structure of the Transmuter's Estate. Most of all, she is doing this because she feels her siblings don't value her or her talents as much as they should.
Chandrelle's first instinct is to resist the party when they arrive. She first uses a Ticking Kindlemaid (see Clockwork Automaton for details) carefully disguised as herself to engage with the party from a safe, remote location. If pressed into combat herself, she continuously summons more constructs - digging into Hall of Archetypes reserves if required - while protecting herself with layers of wax armor and throwing up illusory smokescreens to shield herself from direct attack. If desperate, she may use noxious conjured vapors to damage the party's sense of sight and smell, further enhancing her chance of surviving the encounter.
Diplomatic characters might appeal to Chandrelle by showing respect for her talents or somehow convincing her of Threa's and Bushnell's sisterly love for her. If befriended in this manner, Chandrelle is willing to provide party members with coats of protective wax armor (Reinforce) and a small retinue of conjured Ticking Kindlemaids to serve as bodyguards.
Hygiene
Chandrelle is meticulous about cleanliness, as she frequently works around flames and soot and wishes not to track these out of the workshop. She smells faintly of candle wax and vanilla at all times, though whether his is part of her physiology as an animant based on a candlestick or a function of her profession in the household remains unclear.
