The Primal War

Among the many conflicts fought throughout Taeva's history, none have ever come close to the scale or destruction of the Primal War (also known as the First War). Fought between the ancient Giants and Dragons, the destruction wrought by this war reshaped nearly every facet of the nascent world, and many Giantkin and Dragonkin trace their origins to this conflict. Though many ages have passed since its conclusion, the scars of the Primal War can still be felt across the world.

The Conflict

Prelude

In the beginning, the Giants and Dragons were sent to the Mortal Realm in order to aid in its structuring, with the Dragons baing tasked with directing and stabilising the Flow of Aether, and the Giants being tasked with shaping the land. While they initially worked alongside one another, a rivalry began to form between the Giants and Dragons, with each side believing they had a stronger claim to the role of custodian of Taeva than the other. Eventually, this rivalry would reach its breaking point, and the world was plunged into the chaos of its first war.

Deployment

Every Giant and Dragon was involved in the war. Additionally, as the war progressed, the various races created by the two sides would become involved in the war as well, fighting alongside their creators.

Battlefield

The Primal War was fought across Taeva, with no part of the world being completely spared from the chaos.

The Engagement

At the outset of the conflict, the fighting was initially limited to the Giants and Dragons, though the fighting was still highly destructive. As the conflict progressed, the tools and abilities used by both sides would evolve, including the magics of the Dragons, as well as the Runic Magic and Dragonkiller weapons of the Giants. Even during these early years, the conflict caused significant chaos and destruction, with large partions of the land and seas being reshaped.

During the later stages of the war, the Giants and Dragons began seeking out methods to further bolster their forces. To this end, both sides set themselves to the act of creating numerous servitor races in their image, influenced by the mortal races of the world. Among the Dragons, the first such attempt at such a creation were the Adyar, a race of dracotaurs hatched from enchanted Dragon eggs. Despite their strength and arcane might, the process of creating them was too slow for the war effort, and so the Drakai were created to succeed them, and while they were weaker and shorter lived in comparision to the Adyar, the quicker rate at which they were produced quickly saw them forming the bulk of the Draconic forces. In response to these developments, the Giants would begin creating their own servitor races to counter them, with their initial attempts resulting in the creation of a number of beastkin, including the Minotaurs and Ursukar. As the war raged on and more of their bretheren fell in battle, the Giants would eventually turn to using the shattered remains of their fallen to create the Giantkin known as the Jotnar in their image.

Eventually, the war would end in victory for the Dragons, with the majority of the remaining Giants being forced to flee west to the continent of Aesuth. Though the war had ended millenia ago, the world had been drastically altered by the actions of those who fought in it.

Outcome

The Dragons would emerge victorious, with the Giants being forced to the continent of Aesuth to the west.

Aftermath

The world had been drastically changed by the events of the conflict, not just in its landscape, but even in the nature of magic (it's said that as a result of the influence of the Giants, arcane magic is much rarer in Aesuth, with Runic and Druidic Magic being the dominant forms of magic). Additionally, many of the races created by either side of the conflict would go on to spread across the world, and grow into their own nations and cultures.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The effects of the Primal War are still seen today in the various races created by the Giants and Dragons, as well as the effects it had on reshaping the environment. As the first war fought within the Mortal Realm, it's also considered to be one of the most significant historical events in Taeva's history, and it's events still live on in the memory of the Giants and Dragons, who still feel immense animosity for one another for the events of the conflict.
