The Weeping

The Weeping is a virus that originated in the Tolesh hemisphere. The name comes from the redness and constant watering of the eyes, light sensitivity (causing the person to cover their eyes), muscle fatigue (causing them to slump over), and shortness of breath (causing a sobbing like breathing pattern). Sick patients will often sit in dark comers, slumped over, covering their watering eyes and taking jerking breaths (sobbing). The overall effect makes the infected look like they are crying. The Weeping kills one in ten people it infects if they are not from Tolesh. Toleshi rarely die from it. Contact with someone already dramatically increases the chance of contracting the disease.   I would like to point out, this article was written nearly 3 years before COVID...just sayin..

Transmission & Vectors

Body fluid (sneezing, coughing, touch, etc)

Causes

This is caused by a virus native to the Tolesh hemisphere.

Symptoms

The onset of the infection is conjunctivitis, possibly followed by nasal congestion, sore throat, then lungs/respiratory system infection. Additionally, they are inflicted with muscle fatigue and light sensitivity. Fatal cases eventually result death from pneumonia.

Treatment

Cure Disease and similar spells work. There is no know non-magical cure.

Prognosis

CONTRACTION Exposed: Anyone that has been in Toesh more than 9 months has a 1% chance of randomly contracting the virus. (Rolled by the DM on a random day each year). Unexposed: If the character is new to the hemisphere (previously unexposed to the virus), roll once per month for the fist nine months, then once per year thereafter. Foreigners new to the hemisphere have a 10% chance of contracting the disease minus 1% for each month there are in Tolesh. Month 1 = 10%, Month 2 = 9% down to Month 9 = 2%, and 1% thereafter. The DM rolls a check the 15th day the person comes is in Tolesh, then every 30 days thereafter (up to 255 days). The days are cumulative, so if you come for 7 days, then leave and come back for 8 more, that is 15 days. You may contract the disease multiple times.   CONTAGIOUS: You are contagious 1-6 days (Divide your DURATION roll below by 2) Every CONSECUTIVE day a person comes in contact with an CONTAGIOUS person they add 10% to their CONTRACTION chance. This effect is cumulative, so being around a contagious person for 6 days straight adds 60% to their chance of CONTRACTION. If you do not come in contact with the person for a day (or more), the count resets. The DM rolls a CONTRACTION check each day of exposure to the contagious person IN ADDITION to the normal checks. (Example a Unexposed person that comes in contact with a contagious person for 6 straight contagious days has a 70% chance of contracting the virus)   DURATION: If contracted, the infection will last 2-12 days (2d6). (DM or Player roll)   RESISTANCE: For every month the person is in Tolesh, they get to add +1 to the SEVERITY roll up to a +9. This starts at conception, so a baby gestated for 9 months gets a +9 when born on the SEVERITY roll. Additionally while in the womb, the baby uses the mothers rolls if an infection occurs. A human baby conceived, carried, and born in Tolesh only has a 1% chance of a Fatal Infection.   SEVERITY: The DM or Player rolls another percent die.   FATAL: 01-10 The patient contracts all symptoms (incl. Fatigue/Sensitivity*). The patient must make a Death Save (Player roll) every day for the DURATION (2-12 days) of the infection. If failed, the player dies.   SEVERE: 11-30 The patient gets all symptoms (incl. Fatigue/Sensitivity*), but it is not fatal. The patient is completely incapacitated (bedridden) for the DURATION (2-12 days).   MODERATELY SEVERE: 31-50 The patient has severe conjunctivitis, nasal congestion, sore throat/coughing, plus Fatigue/Sensitivity*.   MODERATE: 51-70 The patient gets conjunctivitis, nasal congestion, plus Fatigue/Sensitivity* for the DURATION.   MILD: 71-90 The patient contracts conjunctivitis, plus Fatigue/Sensitivity* for the DURATION.   MINOR: 91-00 The patient contracts minor conjunctivitis (-1 to vision related checks) for the DURATION.   * Any SEVERITY roll below 90 gives you severe Fatigue (-3 to strength/dexterity/constitution checks) and Light Sensitivity (disadvantage in bright light/vision) for the duration.

Hosts & Carriers

Humanoids, which are affected by it.

Prevention

Avoiding contact with infected creatures

Epidemiology

This spreads through contact with infected creatures. It is particularily severe to people that have not been to Tolesh.

History

During the Goldmane War the disease ran rampant through the Goldmane troops, and spread back to the Old World. The epidemic was so bad that it caused the Goldmane to lose the war for Tolesh, which they were previously winning handedly. The Goldman were much better one-on-one warriors and had greater numbers, but they believed in rough individualism and relied on each soldier knowing medicine for healing. Previously, this medical autonomy worked well on the battlefield, but the Weeping has no natural cure, so the Goldmane were devastated. The Goance were weaker individually, and had fewer numbers, but they were better tacticians. They were also more religious. The Goance army was organized into squads, generally with a cleric that could cast cure disease, so the Weeping did not hit them as hard.

Cultural Reception

The Old World restricts the travel of people from Tolesh.
