Taeris is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.
Much has been written and discussed about race, sexuality, subjugation, politics opinions etc. in the last few years.
1) Real life will not be brought into the game. Taeris is a fantasy world.
2) Player to Player disrespect in any fashion (age, racial, sexual, religious, etc.) IS NOT TOLERATED.
3) Every player in Taeris is to be treated equally by everyone else. PERIOD. This is a ZERO TOLERANCE policy.
4) We are here to play D&D. I respect everyone equally, and I expect the same from all other players and DM’s I am associated with.
In addition to playing D&D we are here to be friends in real life. We are here to help one another as best we can in real life. The players in Taeris, and D&D in general typically form a bond between one another that comes from adventuring and having fun in a fantasy world that only they are privy to. I am not saying everyone will be best buds with everyone else, but I do expect all DM’s and players to consider one another brothers and sisters of the dice!
Taeris contains adult subjects and violent events. It contains scary stuff and less than ideal situations. This does NOT transfer to or from the real world.
1) D&D is a game. It is NOT the real world. We DO NOT mix the two in any way shape or form. Situations that happen in Taeris are no way connected to real life events.
2) There are bad guys that do bad things in Taeris. You cannot have heroes without bad things for the heroes to be heroic against. After all, heroes overcoming the bad guys is the basis of the fantasy genre. You, as a hero of Taeris, are hereby charged with eradicating the evils that you come across!
3) Most Dungeons and Dragons campaigns involve killing things. Killing something is a serious thing, perhaps the most serious thing you can do to another living creature. All other actions are equal to, or less severe than killing. This is reflected in the game.
4) There are conflicts IN GAME between like creatures of certain outlooks with others holding different outlooks. Orcs do raid weaker villages, so villagers are distrustful of orcs.
5) Since the first edition of AD&D any INDIVIDUAL of any race or type is NOT restricted to acting a certain way because of race or type. Individuals can overcome distrust by proving their mettle (Gimli and Legolas became fast friends despite the tension between elves and dwarves).
With all that said, the DMs in Taeris will be as accommodating as they can be. If you have any issues that really bother you, talk to your DM immediately (before the first session). When considering what to talk to the DM about, please insure it is a legitimate concern. If you have a general dislike of spiders, the DM may (or may not) put spiders in the game. If your close relative was killed by house fire, the DM will keep this type of situation out of the game. This is a case-by-case situation. It is your responsibility to talk to the DM about these issues beforehand. The DM will be as accommodating as they can. Please keep in mind DMs are people too (some of them very distracted humans at that) so if there is a slip up, politely point it out the DM. Be as considerate of other as you wish them to be of you. Also, please note, this is a fluid situation, talk to your DM if you feel strongly about any of these policies, or lack thereof.
If you have major issues with multiple things within the game, talk to the other players and if they agree, approach the DM, and speak with them about adjusting the playstyle of the whole campaign. Group consensus gives the DM the flexibility of making changes without making certain players happy while disappointing others in the party.
I will not outright ban evil characters, but I STRONGLY recommend you do not play one. Over the many years I have been DMing, I have never seen anyone play an evil character in a mixed group that did not, at some point, cause conflict.
Personally, I absolutely LOATHE PvP within a party. Nothing good ever comes from it. 9.9 times out of 10 it leads to animosity/bad feelings between players and is disruptive to the game. Please consider this before you decide you want to kill, cheat, or steal from you party member(s).
In general, I am not fond of any kind of competition between players or characters unless it is good natured and consensual. Trying to “build a better character” than another player, trying to form cliques with other players to the exclusion of others, singling out or favoritism among players/DMs, etc. always leads to stress within a gaming group. Stress leads to cracks. Cracks lead to fallouts.
Generally speaking, the games will take a PG tone. If something is said that makes you uncomfortable, please bring it to the DM’s attention so they can address it. Years ago, I had a girl tell me she would not play D&D because a DM (whom I did not know) told her she had to take her shirt off in RL because her character did in game. I was stunned that this would happen. This is an extreme example, but I don’t want ANYONE to ever feel like this about D&D for ANY reason like this.
In summary, be respectful to each other in real life, while you are enjoying exploring the world of Taeris.
