Grog the Half Giant

Grog the Half-Giant Fisherman

Grog is a towering figure, easily standing over eight feet tall with broad, muscular shoulders and a perpetually hunched posture that makes him seem even more imposing. His skin is weathered and tough from long hours spent by the lake, and his hair is a scraggly, uneven mess that he occasionally trims with a fish knife. His hands are enormous, rough, and calloused—perfect for his peculiar style of fishing, which involves bludgeoning large fish with a hefty rock he affectionately calls "Thunk."

Personality

Grog is a simple soul, driven by a few straightforward joys: fishing, drinking grog, and resting by the lake. He speaks in broken sentences, his deep voice booming like distant thunder. Though not unfriendly, Grog’s limited intelligence and overwhelming physical presence make people uneasy. He doesn’t understand sarcasm, subtlety, or social cues, often leading to awkward or unintentionally humorous encounters. Despite this, Grog is harmless and means well—he simply doesn’t have the mental tools to navigate complex situations.

Routine

Grog spends his days on the lake’s shores, wielding "Thunk" to catch oversized fish, using brute force rather than finesse. He’s surprisingly effective at this, though his methods are unconventional and sometimes destructive to the environment. Once his fishing is done, Grog hauls his catch to the market for a little coin then usually heads to the Fiery Crab for mugs of grog, which he downs with unrestrained enthusiasm. He has poor taste in drink, the fancier, more refined, and expesive the drink is, the less likely he is to like it.

At night, Grog returns to his modest sleeping spot by the lake—a patch of sand beneath a rock ledge, where he curls up with Klunk and an old, tattered blanket. The sound of the lake’s gentle waves lulls him to sleep.

Relationships

While Grog is a regular at the Fiery Crab and occasionally visits the Iron Chalice Tavern, most people keep their distance. His size, booming voice, and lack of social grace make him intimidating to others, even though he rarely intends harm. The tavern staff tolerate him, partly because they don't want to get on his bad side, and partly because he’s good-natured in his clumsy way.

Children are fascinated by Grog, often sneaking around to watch him fish or listening to his muddled stories. He doesn’t mind their company and sometimes shares his fish with them, though their parents usually pull them away, fearing Grog’s unpredictable strength.

Quirks

  • Loves grog: Grog’s love for grog is unmatched. He often mistakes any drink for grog and will drink just about anything offered to him, occasionally with disastrous results.
  • "Thunk" as a companion: Grog treats his rock as if it’s a loyal pet, talking to it during fishing trips and blaming it when he misses a catch.
  • Terrible cook: Though Grog insists on cooking his fish sometimes, the results are either burned to a crisp or still raw. Despite this, he eats with gusto.

Notable Traits

  • Strength: Grog’s immense strength is unmatched, making him a formidable fisherman. He once accidentally broke a tavern bench just by sitting down.
  • Unintentional humor: His blunt honesty and simplistic view of the world often lead to comedic situations.
  • Heart of gold: Beneath his intimidating exterior, Grog is kind-hearted, even if his actions sometimes go awry.

Grog’s presence in the city is both a source of unease and amusement. He’s a fixture of life by the lake, embodying a strange but enduring charm that even the most wary citizens can’t ignore.
