The Spiral Mantle

At the beginning, the valturo were hunters, not warriors. This changed when they met with the skat’ra and the Feather and Mandible war broke out between them. When they left their ancestral home, the Eyrie, and flew to their new home in the Cutter, they sought to abandon their warrior side and dedicate themselves solely to serving the Divine Scavenger through faith and prayer. However, during the great migration they met with other nations and cultures. Both secular and religious leaders quickly understood that the world is bigger than they thought, and they needed some protection for themselves if they wanted to protect themselves and their new home.

To achieve this, they asked for the help of the calamor, because their tactics seemed the closest to what the valturo could learn. That’s because both calamor and valturo were able to move in three dimensions - the calamor by swimming in the water and the valturo by flying in the air.

This tacit agreement introduced the first fighting style, primarily designed for war, but in theory, the valturo could also use it in hunting. The base of this formation was what the calamor had already used and learned by observing how larger sea animals, such as whales, dolphins, and sharks, hunted schools of fish. They circled their prey, occasionally separating into smaller groups, and these smaller groups were easier to concentrate on and eat.

In the combat formation version, the valturo still could circle their enemies, shepherd them in a direction, and separate a couple of them on which they could concentrate their attacks. Because of their continuous circular movement, it is hard for their opponents to focus on one valturo, and their adversary doesn’t know when or who will attack next. And last, but not least, a bigger valturo company can create two or more concentric circles in which the circles can quickly switch, further adding to the confusion of their enemies.
