Monarch

Originated in the Thaur Island, monarchies are a kind of government preceeded by an unique individual known as the monarch, also referred to as queen in the case of women monarchs and king in the case of men monarchs, who rules for life or until abdication.
In the particular case of the Principality of Red Crest, the monarch is known as the Prince, a term usually referred to non-acting children of monarchs.   Currently, only Thaur and Red Crest have monarchies as their form of government, with the latter having its power contested actively by the population since the fall of its "parent" government, the Kingdom of Merthiorn.

In The Kingdom Of Thaur

The birth of the Kingdom of Thaur was the most notable and immediate big-scale consequence of the cataclysm known as the High Rust, when months after the fall of the Kingdom of Merthiorn a Merthiornite known as Naelin was found to have tamed a tetsu, a task considered impossible and viewed as a potential start of a reign above the societarians' only threat to dominance.
This feat made him be seen as a saviour and the tetsu, called Dinner, was seen as a protector of the island, raising a new soveirgnty around them.   Naelin is still acting as Thaur's first king. As tetsus are known to live much longer than societarians, the consensus is that Dinner and his descendants will choose the next monarch for the country, making Thaur the only elective monarchy of the Haan Archipelago.

In the Merthiornite Royal Family, the active monarch would choose their heir, traditionally picking the oldest female child.
Though the formal partner of the active monarch will join the family and receive the title, the original descendant of the previous monarch held the actual control over the government and decisions.   The Kingdom of Merthiorn fell in 1 E.Ru after the death of Queen Tesel of Merthiorn to The High Rust.
It was her death, as the first death of a soveirgn country's leader, who was chosen as the end of the Era of Alzufhars and the start of the Era of Rust in the Archipelago's calendar.

In The Kingdom Of Karte

The republic of scaly societarians that reigned Karte Island was overtaken in 2822 E.Alz by a private military force originated in Merthiorn that implanted the Regal Stag Family in the Kartian government founding the Kingdom of Karte.
The heir to the throne was the oldest child of the monarch.   Its last monarch, King Rastapuj, was captured and deposed in 20th of Harvesting, 9 E.Ru in an attack known as the Night of the Unlit Candles, and then executed in the 30 of Preparing of the same year. All remaining Regal Stags fled the island and the kingdom was replaced by the old republican system.

In The Principality of Red Crest

The Red Crest Islands worked as a colony of the Merthiornite until Queen Tesel of Merthiorn declared its "independence" in 2985 E.Alz, turning it into a principality under the reign of Tesel's son, the Honourable Prince Virgilim.   In practice this worked more as a gesture, as the country was widely considered a puppet state of Merthiorn.
This move, however, caused the principality to survive (albeit shakily), after the fall of its mother country, with the Principality currently standing at the brink of a civil war.

Fur & Blood

Other types of societarians around the Haan Archipelago associate monarchies heavily with the furry subspecies, as this type of government has been used by them specifically, specially in the case of the Regal Stags forcing the scaly Kartian under it.   However, Red Crestians will be quick to point that monarchies have been forced into them, and that queens and kings originated in the island of Thaur and expanded from them.

Great overview. I love how you have gone over the different systems in different places that ostensibly all have (or had) a monarchy.

Cool article. I appreciate that you depict the various styles of monarchs within each kingdom.
