War of Dragons
The War of Dragons (also known as the Dragon War and Scaled Tyrant's War) was a 222 year long war that affected much of the world and altered much of the course of history.
Beginnings of the War
Stories about where the Scaled Tyrant came from or how they came to power are as varied as stories about the power they wielded. Nothing is known about their identity other than their moniker. What is known is that they rose to power in Menkerot and that they had developed some means whether by magic or otherwise to harness dragons to their will.
It was there that the first winged drakes were tamed and the first dragon riders came to be. Between dominated dragons and the dragon riders, the Scaled Tryant initiated attacks to the West at Phebisa and to the East toward Ahrodia. Kallistos being the closest neighbour was the first target of the war.
While the timeline of the Dragon War includes the buildup and tensions the first full scale invasion did not occur until 60 years into the conflict when Kallistos was invaded and conquered within a month.
News of such a victory flew just ahead of further invasions. Favari, Dione, and Manat all fought well, but were eventually taken.
Height of the Tyrant's Empire
About 150 years into the long war the Scaled Tyrant had control of the Eastern coast of the Phebisan continent and the Western half of the Ahrodian continent as far east as Nahine. The Turan Caliphate was the only nation capable of defending against the assault.
The Turning Point
It was the dragon riders themselves and ysoki engineers who finally turned the tide against the Scaled Tyrant.
As dragon rider aeyries began to rebel, in the East in Nahine a group of ysoki engineers developed two new siege engines; the trebuchet and the rapid ballista. The trebuchet allowed attacks from further away and the enhanced ballista offered more accurate targeting against aerial assault and quicker reloading.
The Use of Dragons
Never before had any conflict in history utilized dragons to such a degree. It was also part of the reason why the dragon riders defected. The Scaled Tyrant had used dragons indiscriminately and reduced the population numbers significantly. Of the hundreds of species of dragon that existed beforehand less than 50 survived the war.
Legacy
The Dragon War is credited with the creation of the Dragon Rider Conclave along with the Empire of Ahrodia.
