Nerano

Nerano is a city on the South-Western coast of Kallistos. Given its nearby location to Menkerot it once served as the staging point in the later days for the War of Dragons.

Geography

Nerano is built along an inlet on the mountainous coastal line at the base of the volcano Mount Verno. Tiers of the city rise up along the coastal cliffs with roads, stairs, and lifts. Thick woods have historically risen up along the hills and mountains like much of Kallistos.

After the eruption of Mount Verno in 1280 AD much of the landscape was blasted and burned away. Regrowth has been strong and still ongoing in 1305 AD.

History

Nerano has the unfortunate distinction of being destroyed five times in its history.

  • Earthquake of 672 AD
  • An earthquake concentrated off the Western coast of Kallistos in the channel between it and Menkerot occurred in 672 AD. Many cities along the coast on either side were hit with tidal waves and heavy damage from the shaking. It remains the strongest earthquake on record for the region.
  • Tsunami of 680 AD
  • A massive storm rocked the region in 680 AD that is believed to have been created by a meteor strike in the Lavinia Sea. The tsunami hit the Southern coast of Kallistos hard damaging many cities. The tsunami triggered a landslide as it struck the city of Nerano sending much of the city into the inlet.
  • 1st Sacking of Nerano (War of Dragons) in 882 AD
  • During the War of Dragons the city came under attack by the Scaled Tyrant's forces. Strong resistance forces within the region caused the city to be burned to the ground as the struggle proved fierce.
  • 2nd Sacking of Nerano (War of Unification) in 1098 AD
  • During the Imperial War of Unification the Western most provinces of Kallistos proved the most resistant to annexation by the Empire. The citizens of Nerano and their history of struggle proved great, seeing the city once more burned to the ground.
  • Eruption of Mount Verno in 1280 AD
  • A sudden eruption of the long dormant Mount Verno in 1280 AD covered the area in pyroclastic flow. The population of the city, well practiced in evacuations as ancestral traditions by that point, were able to save most. The determined, stubborn people returned to the city some months later when Mount Verno calmed to excavate their city.

The perseverance of the people of Nerano seems unmatched by many. Still, one wonders what will be the next calamity to befall the city and when.
