Ireena Kolyana

Ireena Kolyana is a former citizen of the village of Barovia, the reincarnation of Strahd von Zarovich's long-lost love Tatyana Ostrovsky, and Barovia's second-youngest full-fledged vampire.   She is 27 years old, and has spent the last two months and change in Castle Ravenloft, first as a guest, then as a prisoner. The whereabouts and status of her mother are unknown. Her father was Kolyan Indirovich, former burgomaster of the village of Barovia, now deceased. She has one older brother, Ismark Kolyanovich, who is now the burgomaster of the village of Barovia, and who offered our heroes 50 gp to deliver Ireena safely to Vallaki.   Little is known about Ireena's childhood, youth, or adult life prior to the party's arrival. However, it is known that as the daughter of the burgomaster she was considered nobility, and that sometime in the last year, Strahd von Zarovich took an interest in her. Early on, both the party and Ireena herself were perplexed by this interest, as well as his insistence on calling her Tatyana; in the intervening time it has become clear that he has pursued Ireena out of the belief that she is the reincarnation of his long-dead lost love — a belief that was, as it turns out, absolutely true. However, as of the Feast of St. Andral's, he had begun to call her by her own name.   Despite his obsession with her, Strahd has displayed a willingness to disregard her will as well as the safety and well-being of others while pursuing her. He sent Doru away once his obsession with Ireena began, and has used his innate charm effects to bite her in the past. His campaign of harassment against her led directly to the death of her father, whose heart couldn't take the prolonged stress, and to the death of her brother after her resurrection following her initial few days in Castle Ravenloft (it's fine; they both got better). It was also an instrumental factor in the deal her brother made, leading to his current state of corruption.   Ireena has a restrained personality, though she frequently got frustrated and/or exasperated with the party, particularly when someone was displaying an excess of crude behaviour or a general disregard for their own well-being. It seems likely, based off this and how vocal she got with the Lady Wachter once she was a little tipsy, that Ireena represses a lot.   Despite the initial terms of their acquaintance, in which the party agreed to escort Ireena until she was safely in Vallaki in exchange for money, the party seemed reluctant to part ways with her once they'd arrived, and Ireena seemed grateful for their continued companionship. She seemed determined to help out the party in what ways she could, paying for goods they couldn't afford and picking up healer's kits to help them avoid any more near-death experiences.   During the party's second encounter with Strahd, Ireena offered to go with him in exchange for him promising to leave our heroes alone. The particulars of her time at Castle Ravenloft are still largely unknown, though the party knows she died once and had to be resurrected, that she used Strahd's personal library to do research, that she still had enough fight in her to try sneaking them maps of the castle, and that after she connected with her past lives, she was possessed by Aksinya Rodzyanko, the version of her most loyal to Strahd, who told Strahd and Rahadin of Ireena's plans and abilities. Following this, Ireena was locked in a tomb in Ravenloft's dungeons, to prevent her from interfering more in Strahd's plans.   What Strahd intended to do with Ireena if he succeeded in destroying the party will never be known; when he found the castle under attack and his strength waning, he turned her in a panic, and the next time the party encountered her, it was Sylvain learning that she'd been turned into spawn. In a spare moment, with Strahd briefly out of the room, Ireena shared that she thought she could resist Strahd's will thanks to Tatyana, and that she'd wait for the right moment to act and help Sylvain escape her fate; ultimately, when the time came, the best she could do was turn Sylvain herself so that he'd be bound to her will instead of Strahd's, offering her blood to him and his agency with it once he rose.   Though Ireena has done a remarkable job of keeping the damage from the past two months at bay, assisting the party in their plans to assault the castle, advising on the temperaments of his allies, and managing her brother's intermittent desire to destroy the party and take Barovia for himself, it's obvious she's been through a lot, as evidenced by her brief dissociative episode in the immediate aftermath of Strahd being reduced to 0 hit points. What she intends to do now that Strahd is dead remains to be seen.
