Arrigal Yezhov
Arrigal Yezhov is a Vistana and former servant of Strahd von Zarovich. The party first met Arrigal early in their travels, upon reaching the Vallaki Vistani camp, where he and his brother Luvash, leader of the group, welcomed the party, with Arrigal in particular seemingly eager to get to know some of our heroes a little better.
The tenor of their acquaintance shifted when Luvash's niece Arabelle went missing that night, with the party rescuing her from the Vallaki townsman who was about to sacrifice her to the lake in search of better fishing, presumably a perversion of old myths of the Weaver and her association with bodies of water. The party bore witness to Arrigal's close relationship with his niece, as well as his willingness to casually kill those who threatened her. It wasn't long before they received more direct experience of these traits of Arrigal's when he tried and failed to assassinate Ayduin, though the attempt would have been a success if not for Ayduin's deal with Seriach. The party captured and interrogated Arrigal, learning that the information they'd gleaned from Arabelle had been noticed by Strahd, who had ordered Arrigal to kill one of the party members to prove his family's loyalty, lest Arabelle suffer the consequences of psychic snitching.
Though some party members were less sympathetic to Arrigal's plight, with Bodaway earning a Vistani curse despite Ismark's repeated warnings, a deal was struck, with Sylvain volunteering to let Arrigal kill him at the abbey in Krezk, where he knew the Abbot would be willing and able to resurrect him. Thus, for a time, Arrigal and the party enjoyed an uneasy truce, with the chained assassin travelling at their side to liberate the Wizard of Wines and Tuama Beannaithe from those coill cailleacha who lived in service to Strahd.
Upon reaching the abbey, Arrigal and the party alike were perturbed to find the body of famed monster hunter and former mentor to Ezmerelda d'Avenir, Dr. Rudolph van Richten, along with a lengthy letter from Strahd describing Dr. van Richten's senseless slaughter at the Vallaki Vistani camp. Following van Richten's resurrection and Sylvain's murder, they all experienced a brief visit from Strahd and his brides before, in the wake of van Richten's abduction and Sylvain's slightly delayed resurrection, Arrigal parted ways, eager to return to the camp he'd been meant to protect.
The next time the party saw Arrigal, it was in the dead of night as they fled Vallaki (again). Assisting them briefly once again, Arrigal left on his own business — kidnapping people in Waterdeep to help Strahd psychologically torture Sylvain, as they later learned. Despite this betrayal, Sylvain at least couldn't help but note the decided absence of any of the people who he would have been especially devastated to see turned to vampire spawn or otherwise harmed.
With some warning, the party was able to send word ahead to their companions, putting another group of highly talented friends in Baldur's Gate on high alert. As a result, though Arrigal still successfully made off with nine victims from that city, he had to fight for them, and lost the tenth, one of the only planned victims with a strong tie to Bodaway.
Despite this, when Arabelle offered the party a deal in exchange for their agreeing not to harm her uncle, Sylvain accepted. Though they thought all was lost when their initial assault on the castle failed, putting them beyond the deadline Arabelle had given, when Sylvain became aware of Arrigal's presence through unexpected mystical means in the second battle, he sent a plea to the Vistana, asking him to take their side. Despite or perhaps because of all he'd done in Strahd's name and his dedication to the safety of his people and his family, Arrigal agreed, convincing his remaining companions to join him in betraying Strahd. Thus, when the party finally killed the vampire lord, it was with Arrigal at their side.
As for what the Vistana plans to do next, or how long this tentative peace between him and the party will last, we can only wait and see.
