History
Emergency shelters were set up as a response to an increase in natural disasters. As Earth's atmosphere became more unstable due to climate change and global warming, the number of natural disasters recorded each year began to rise. To combat this, emergency shelters were created. A meeting point in each community to protect them in the case of emergency.Stats
Effectiveness
Uses
Although Emergency Shelters have proven to save lives during natural disasters such as forest fires, avalanches and earthquakes, they have failed to be as useful at protecting against volcanic eruptions and flooding.Flooding
During floods there have been reports of poorly built shelters causing people to become trapped beneath the water, or shelters themselves becoming flooded. This is mainly caused by inadequate building materials, or local councils attempting to cut costs. Unfortunately, this has cost many lives over the last 1000 years.Volcanic Eruption
Even though designers and engineers have tried, they have yet to create a material that can fully withstand the heat of a volcanic eruption. This means that in this case, emergency shelters are not suitable, and evacuation is the necessary solution. But, in some cases (such as the Yellowstone Eruption 3016) evacuation is not possible, and many lives are lost.Earthquakes
Earthquakes are a common side-effect of volcanic eruptions, and while emergency shelters are not best suited to protection against the eruptions themselves, they are key at protecting citizens from falling buildings during an earthquake.
