Mission Log

On Stardate 81351.6, a joint away mission team deployed from the USS Rhea NCC-80110 to investigate anomalous planetary readings within the Delta-M grid, supported by a modular shelter equipped with the unique trait “Precisely What’s Needed.” Their initial exploration of the region yielded standard scan returns from 320 degrees of the local terrain. However, a 10-degree arc across a mountain range exhibited an absence of sensor data—anomaly classification: void response. The team initiated a 10-kilometer overland trek to investigate.

Entering a cave system within the anomaly zone, the team encountered immediate environmental traits that suppressed all communications and sensor returns—designated “Rock, Faraday, and Me.” Further complications arose in the form of structural instability (“Rocks May Fall”) and fragile surfaces (“Unstable Rock Formation”). Terrain traversal demanded intense physical coordination and engineering creativity, with the team anchoring lines and establishing safe-passage traits to cross perilous ledges and vertical climbs.

During the descent into the deeper cave systems, the team encountered a geothermally active chamber. A partially formed lava pocket created lethal conditions—documented under the trait “Falling Isn’t Dangerous—Impact Is.” Tactical maneuvering and engineering work mitigated the danger. Despite precautions, Lt. Ross sustained burns during traversal. Lt. Taril created a stabilizing mid-point “Island” for Lt. Aze’s sprint across the chamber.

Psychological interference soon manifested. A crystalline cavern emitted psychic feedback, reflecting individual traumas. Lt. JG Alissa hallucinated an encounter with Gul Dukat, nearly engaging her allies. Lt. JG Lon Taril calmed her telepathically. Lt. JG Berza succumbed to a Borg assimilation illusion. Aze restored cognitive integrity. Lt. Cmdr. Sosalis experienced an Anabej mating hallucination, nearly triggering a cave-in. Again, Lon intervened.

The cave system terminated in a vast subterranean chamber. Embedded within the mountain was a derelict starship—a Prometheus-class vessel wedged and partially collapsed within the cavern walls. Inspection revealed structural compromise at the base and reinforced intentionality in its descent trajectory.

Lt. Cmdr. Sosalis and Lt. JG Lon attempted access via a vehicle bay. A climbing accident led to Lon fracturing his arm. Aze accessed the interior manually and extended the ramp via hydraulic override. Initial scans revealed no active power, but a jury-rig using a phaser rifle’s power cell activated limited LCARS access. Triage was preemptively applied to Lon by Lt. Ross.

Data retrieved from LCARS logs indicated “live entries” still being made in Main Engineering (alpha). The team advanced through the Jeffries tubes, finding them thick with undisturbed dust, in contrast to the main corridors, which showed clear signs of recent maintenance by active service drones.

Addendum – Stardate 81357.9

In Engineering (alpha), the team discovered three automated holograms (Tactical, Engineering, and Science), continuously executing malfunctioning repair protocols. Their efforts were being consistently countered by a fourth presence: an unclassified AI construct taking the form of a 13-year-old boy with a posh accent—nicknamed "Donald the Menace." Unlike the others, Donald operated beyond holographic constraints and actively inhibited all repairs.

Analysis of the engineering logs revealed the holograms have been operating in recursive patterns (4x4x4 permutations) for four years, continuously nullified by Donald’s interference. The larger computer core is determined to be in a compromised “Safe Mode.” The AI holograms have no higher-order adaptability—only rudimentary task sets.

The team is now engaged in a structured technical counter-effort: to overcome Donald’s sabotage and restore system integrity. Results pending next phase of mission engagement.

Personal Log – Intermission
Stardate: 81354.6

Following the prior mission, commendations were formally issued aboard the USS Rhea NCC-80110. Nine citations, recognizing tactical excellence, leadership, and Federation ideals, were awarded. The crew gathered in Ten Forward for celebration. A mood of both admiration and subtle rivalry permeated the room, as veteran officers observed the rapid effectiveness of the Heimdahl’s new core crew.

Commendation Record Extract:

  • Berza Vanel, Heroic Service
  • Aze, Advanced Cyber Operations (multiple)
  • Alissa, Tactical Precision
  • Lon Taril, Frontier Expansion
  • Shris Sosalis, Leadership and Valor (multiple citations)

Lt. Cmdr. Sosalis was summoned privately to the Captain’s Ready Room to receive the full list—a literal stack of recognition for exemplary service.

End log.

Trait: “Precisely What’s Needed”

The Modular Shelter has the narrative trait “Precisely What’s Needed”. Whenever a scene calls for specific survival, exploration, or scientific equipment—be it for spelunking, rock climbing, survival, or diagnostics—the shelter contains exactly what is required for the job. This includes quantity, quality, and specialization of tools. The trait represents plot-reactive provisioning, not omnipotence—if it’s reasonable for a Federation-grade shelter to have it, it does.

Starfleet-Issued Kit (Automatically Present)

  • Tricorders (standard, medical, engineering, exo-species variants)
  • Scientific scanners and samplers
  • Portable PADD systems with uplink to ship’s database
  • Medical supplies for triage and treatment
  • Environmental gear (EV suits, atmosphere testers)
  • Communication beacons and signal boosters

Civilian/Common Gear (Always On Hand)

  • Deployable micro-fusion reactor (sealed and radiation-safe)
  • Mid-scale replicator (raw matter feed via shelter storage)
  • Beds and thermal covers
  • Multipurpose cutting and digging tools:
  • Knives, hand axes, mini saws
  • Rope, clamps, pitons, grappling tools
  • Emergency rations, water filtration
  • Physical shelter plating resistant to weather, light radiation, and low-yield impact

Use in Play: Treat the shelter as a semi-sentient background device capable of fulfilling narrative logistics, without overshadowing player agency. It does not automate actions—it merely ensures the crew is never unprepared. In a game using STA 2e, this translates to reduced Complication generation from unpreparedness or lack of equipment in survival, scientific, or field engineering scenes.
