Siren

The Siren's (Current working title) are a species of sentient underwater creatures who have been building a civilization beneath the waves in parallel with the nations on the surface. Only recently did the two officially meet each other starting rudimentary communications and trade networks. As the civilized world expands their borders contact with the aquatic races becomes more and more important.

They have there settlements at the bottom of semi-deep water near the edge of the continental slope on the shelf. They have smaller settlements and build their cities around different oceanic land forms like seamounts and guyots. There architecture is interesting and generally bulbous in design or sharing similar shapes to coral reefs. While industry has been made difficult in an all water environment, some levels of early industry have been built down here with bubbles of smoke rising to the surface. Though buoys need to be deployed in these areas as the bubbles can be big enough to swallow ships whole, causing two massive disasters at once.

While the surface dwellers find their association with the deep unnerving and leads to some strange revearment, the Sirens however, share a similar fear of the depths of the sea. Finding the creatures there equally unsettling. There is also a series of beliefs that there may be deep Sirens in further depths, however no recent discoveries have proven their existence.
