Personal history
Willa was the unexpected third child of Jack and Elizabeth Childs, who had not planned to have any more children since they already had the ideal pairing of a son (Jesse) and a daughter (Danica). However, the news was a happy surprise for Jack and Elizabeth but especially for Danica, who wished for a baby sister. The Childs' home did not have a spare room for a nursery so Willa's crib was set up in Danica's room. Danica was fascinated with Willa after her arrival and was eager to help her mother with feeding, dressing, and even changing her. Jesse was less interested in the new baby and found her annoying when she cried. He had hoped for a brother and was not thrilled about having two sisters. As Willa grew older, she started to grow on Jesse and he thought she was cute-- just as long as she didn't go in his room or touch his things. Willa adored her big sister Danica because she was always willing to play and she invented the best games. Willa also adored princesses and dressing up and playing pretend. Danica always let her be the princess and she would be the champion who rescued Willa from towers or dragons or whatever the game called for on that particular night. When Willa was eight, her father passed away unexpectedly. His death upset her greatly but talking to the school counselor and expressing her emotions authentically without a thought of avoiding or running from them allowed her to process the loss and move past it more quickly and easily than her other family members. During her time of mourning and transition, Willa stopped believing in fairy tales and no longer cared for princesses or pretending. Instead, she turned her attention to celebrities, supermodels, makeup, and fashion. This change deeply bothered Danica, who was still into magic long after Willa lost interest. The sisters grew apart as time passed, losing the close bond they had as small children, although they still enjoyed having fun together from time to time. Willa became obsessed with being popular after she entered middle school and put all her energy into her friends, her thoughts consumed by what they thought of her. She felt slightly ashamed of Danica, who had never been popular. In seventh grade, Willa tried out for cheerleading with her friend Kelsi Bradley but failed to make the team due to her lack of coordination. Kelsi, however, did make the team, which created a riff in their friendship. This led to several fights and make-ups between the two. An argument over the solo part in their upcoming choir concert lasted into Spring Break and was the reason for Willa having nothing else to do on the ill-fated day she joined Danica on a bike ride to the nearby beach.
