The History of Sorum

The History of Sorum starting from The Aldar era and ending at the Modern Era, AKA. The Return of Magic.

The Aldar Era

... 6000 I.E.

The Aldar era was a period of great mystery and intrigue that remains shrouded in much uncertainty and speculation. The Aldars themselves were a highly advanced civilization that predates even the rise of the Irium demigods, and their culture and knowledge have been lost to the ages. What little we do know comes from scattered ruins and artifacts that have been uncovered over the years. This era dates back to far before recorded history.

The Era of Darkness

5000 I.E. 4500 I.E.

The Era of Darkness was a bleak and terrifying time in the history of Sorum. For 500 years, the land was ruled by creatures that were thought to have emerged from the Aldar Gates, though no one was truly certain of their origin. Some spoke of demons and otherworldly beings that had long been imprisoned, while others whispered of the Aldars' own creations, twisted and corrupted by their own power. Whatever their true nature, these monsters were cruel and vicious, and the people of Sorum lived in constant fear of their wrath. During this time, humans were forced to band together for survival, forming small communities that huddled behind walls and fortifications. The monsters, however, were relentless, and many of these settlements fell to their attacks. It seemed as though the darkness would never lift.   But then, a glimmer of hope appeared on the horizon. Humans discovered the art of catalyst magic, which allowed them to harness the power of the world around them. With this new tool at their disposal, they were able to fight back against the monsters, pushing them back and reclaiming lost territory. Slowly but surely, the darkness began to lift, and the dawn of a new era was on the horizon.

The Era of Magic.

4500 I.E. 3000 I.E.

The Era of Magic was a time of great advancement and discovery for the people of Sorum. After centuries of living in fear and uncertainty during the Era of Darkness, the discovery of Catalyst Magic provided humans with a powerful tool to fight back against the monstrous creatures that had overrun the world. With the use of Catalysts, humans were able to harness the magical energy stored within physical matter to cast spells and push back the forces of darkness. However, it was not until the discovery of true Magic that humans truly began to flourish. Through extensive study and experimentation, mages were able to gain insight into the fundamental rules of nature that governed the workings of the world. This understanding allowed them to cast spells without relying on Catalysts, greatly expanding the range and power of their magical abilities.   The rise of Magic led to the formation of the first mage guilds and schools, where knowledge was shared and new discoveries were made. With each passing year, the power of magic grew stronger, and humans were able to reclaim more and more of their lost territories from the monsters that still roamed the land.   The Era of Magic marked a turning point in the history of Sorum, as humans were no longer helpless against the forces of darkness. Instead, they had unlocked a powerful weapon that allowed them to shape their world in ways never before thought possible.

Demigods Rise

3000 I.E. 2500 I.E.

The Demigods Rise is a period in the history of Sorum where the power of magic and human insight grew to such heights that it gave rise to a new class of beings - the Demigods. These beings, once mere mortals, gained incredible power and immortality through their mastery of magic and their connection to the mystical energy that permeated the world. The Demigods were worshiped by their followers, who recognized their god-like abilities and looked to them for guidance and protection. Each Demigod had their own area of expertise, and their powers reflected the nature of their domains. Some were masters of the elements, wielding power over fire, water, earth, and air. Others had dominion over life and death, the mind and the soul, or the forces of nature itself.   As the Demigods gained in power and influence, they became revered figures in the eyes of the people. Their followers built great temples and monuments in their honor, offering sacrifices and prayers to gain their favor. In turn, the Demigods granted blessings to their faithful, bestowing upon them magical gifts and insights into the workings of the world.

The Era of Peace

2500 I.E. 1500 I.E.

The Era of Peace was a time of unparalleled cooperation between humans and demigods. With the rise of demigods to god-like status, humans and demigods worked together to create monumental structures that still stand as a testament to their power and unity. Underground cities were built beneath the earth, delving deep into the crust and even piercing through to the other side. These cities were self-sustaining, with magically powered gardens and aqueducts providing food and water to the inhabitants. They were also highly secure, with intricate magical wards and defenses protecting the citizens from outside threats.   In the skies, floating cities were constructed, suspended by magic alone. These cities were marvels of engineering, with vast networks of mana crystals and magical conduits providing the necessary power to keep them afloat. They were also highly advanced, with sophisticated technologies and magical devices being developed and utilized by their inhabitants.   During this era, humans and demigods lived in harmony, sharing knowledge and resources to create an unprecedented era of peace and prosperity. While this era did not last forever, its legacy remains, and the structures built during this time continue to inspire awe and wonder in all who see them.

The War of Gods

1500 I.E. 0 I.E.

The War of Gods was a devastating conflict that erupted among the powerful demigods who had long ruled over Sorum. For centuries, they had worked in harmony with humanity to create great wonders and push the boundaries of magical knowledge. But as their own power and influence grew, so too did their ambitions, and soon their peaceful coexistence turned into bitter rivalry. The war was brutal and unrelenting, with no mercy shown on either side. Entire cities were razed to the ground, and the once-great marvels of the era of peace were reduced to rubble. Countless lives were lost, both human and divine, as the conflict raged on.   In the end, the demigods emerged victorious, but at a great cost. The war had decimated much of the knowledge and innovation that humans had worked so hard to cultivate, setting them back centuries. Many of the great structures of the era of peace were destroyed beyond repair, and the world was left in a state of chaos and ruin.   Humans had been nearly driven to extinction, with only a small handful managing to survive the conflict. They were forced to flee into hiding, struggling to eke out a living in the ruined wastelands left behind by the war.   For many years, the world remained a dark and dangerous place, haunted by the remnants of the once-powerful demigods and the lingering effects of their destructive conflict. The War of Gods was a grim reminder of the dangers of unchecked power and ambition, and it would be centuries before humanity would begin to recover from its devastating aftermath. This war ended with the death of the oldest and most powerful demigod, Ora, the god of Innovation and Civilization.

The Era of Dust

0 I.E. 3000 A.O.D.

The Era of Dust is a somber period in the history of Sorum, marked by the aftermath of the catastrophic War of Gods. The conflict between the demigods destroyed most of the grand structures and cities that humans had built during the Era of Peace, reducing them to dust and rubble. The demigods, realizing the extent of the destruction they had wrought upon the world, decided to withdraw from active involvement in human affairs, leaving the mortals to fend for themselves. The humans, now bereft of the magical knowledge and power that they once possessed, were forced to eke out a living from the remnants of the past. They scavenged through the ruins of once-great cities, seeking out any scraps of knowledge or technology that could help them survive in this new, harsher world. Basic civilization began to reform, with small groups of humans banding together to form communities and settlements, each trying to carve out a place for themselves in the new order.   But despite their efforts, life was hard and uncertain in the Era of Dust. Resources were scarce, and competition for them was fierce. Conflicts between human groups were common, often leading to bloodshed and violence. Disease and famine were also constant threats, as the humans struggled to adapt to their new way of life.   Despite these challenges, however, the humans persevered. They learned to work together and to build anew, creating a new civilization from the ashes of the old. Slowly but surely, they began to emerge from the shadow of the past, and to carve out a new future for themselves in the world of Sorum.   Although the Era of Dust was marked by a lack of magical innovation and a decline in the power and influence of the demigods, the tales and legends of their exploits persisted through the generations. These stories were passed down through oral tradition, often taking on a mythical quality as they were embellished and exaggerated over time. The tales of the demigods' incredible powers and the magic they wielded remained a source of fascination and wonder for humans in this era. Some even believed that the demigods may one day return to the mortal world, bringing with them the power and magic of old.   During the Era of Dust, the ancient monsters that had once been driven back by the power of the demigods returned from their hidden lairs in the caves and mountains. These monsters had been largely dormant during the height of human civilization and the rule of the demigods, but now they came back in full force, reclaiming large swaths of the world and forcing humans to huddle together in small, fortified enclaves. However, not all of the humanoid species were hostile to humans. Some elves and dwarves had developed friendly relations with humans during the era of peace, and these alliances proved invaluable during the dark times of the Era of Dust. As humans huddled together, isolated and vulnerable, the elves and dwarves offered their help and protection, and over time, they became just as common as humans in the modern era.

The Return of Gods

3000 A.O.D. 4500 A.O.D.

The Return of the gods was an era of renewed hope and faith in the power of magic. The tales and legends of the gods that persisted through the generations during the Era of Dust had grown into full-blown worship, with temples and shrines dedicated to each of the deities scattered throughout the land. In response to this devotion, the gods began to reveal themselves once more to their followers, granting them small but significant insights into the ways of magic. These insights allowed humans to rediscover the long-forgotten art of magic, and slowly but surely, they began to relearn the secrets of casting spells and wielding incredible power. This era was marked by the resurgence of magic, as the gods reestablished their presence in the world and humans regained their ability to harness the mystical forces that had once been so commonplace.

The Return of Magic

4500 A.O.D. and beyond

The Return of Magic was a time of great discovery and wonder for the people of Sorum. The small insights granted by the gods during the previous era had allowed humans to begin to relearn the lost art of magic. While the magic they rediscovered was not as powerful as the ancient magic of the Demigods, it was still a remarkable achievement. Through this rediscovered magic, humans were able to uncover the history of their ancestors and the Demigods. They discovered long-forgotten knowledge and rediscovered the power of catalyst magic, which was believed to be the key to unlocking more powerful spells. Despite being less powerful than the magic of the Demigods, the Return of Magic era saw the re-establishment of civilization and the growth of new kingdoms, built on the foundations of the ancient ruins that had been salvaged in the previous era. The return of magic brought about new discoveries, new technologies, and new ways of life. The ancient tales of magic and the Demigods became more than just myths and legends, as they were studied and understood in ways that had been lost for centuries.   As the current era in Sorum, the Return of Magic continues to be a time of great progress and growth. The power of magic is still being rediscovered and explored, and new advancements are being made in fields such as alchemy, engineering, and architecture. The knowledge gained from the past continues to shape the future, as humans strive to create a new era of innovation and wonder.
