Today, just before dawn, the tides around the jagged reef buckled without wind, and the currents folded in upon themselves like shivering fabric. At first I believed it was the usual oceanic turbulence, common enough in these cursed waters, but then the reef rose from the sea. Ton Ton, the Zaraton, emerged from beneath the coral shelf like a mountain remembering its name.He is a creature of scale and quiet intention. He is no mere beast, despite what the first reports claim. His shell is overgrown with algae, trees, and even the broken hulls of ships too foolish or fated to chart his path. His eyes, vast and slow-turning, do not reflect light; they hold it, as if time itself slows beneath his gaze.
There are stories whispered by sailors. A living island. A creature who bears not only the world on his back, but some forgotten task older than gods. Many dismissed these tales as salt-addled fantasy. I did, once. No longer.
For hours he simply drifted. Then without warning, he turned west with purpose. The water followed him, drawn like breath into lungs long unused. I measured a drop in temperature, and the barnacle sprites along my vessel's hull fell silent—an ominous first. One does not simply watch Ton Ton; one feels his movement in the bones, in the pressure behind the eyes. Ton Ton is not merely a remnant of a primeval age. He is active. His choices are deliberate. Something calls him, or perhaps, something has been awoken by him.
I intend to follow at a safe distance. For science, yes—but also because I cannot stop myself. Something about him compels observation. As if the very act of witnessing Ton Ton is part of whatever great unfolding story he now walks within. May the tide carry me safely.
