Anima Shields
A shield generator wraps a protective sphere of An around itself. The sphere can be expanded until it completely surrounds a ship, person, or structure, although doing so requires ever greater amounts of energy as the shielded space grows. The sphere is invisible to conventional sight. It appears as a translucent, golden sphere when viewed with spirit sight. If anything impacts against the shield, the point of impact will produce a brief, visible ripple.
Resonance cloaks cannot hide an active shield, and as such, using shields can give away the presence of anyone attempting to remain stealthy. They also draw the attention of the denizens of First Space. Consequently, ships generally leave their shields off during first space travel unless they come under attack, relying instead on the secrecy afforded by their resonance cloaks. The lack of radiation in first space makes this a viable option. In Second Space, however, the crew of a ship beyond the magnetosphere of a planet may receive substantial doses of radiation should they lower the shields. This makes stealth difficult in most parts of normal space.
Shields protect against both spirit and conventional energy as well as matter moving at high speed (more than 1000 kph). This provides protection against radiation and most forms of attack. Every shield generator has a maximum amount of energy it can deflect before collapsing.
