Divine Spark
Deities are those entities that have a Divine Spark or were created with the energy of a Divine Spark, such as the Great Wyrms. A Devine Spark is the essence and source of the divine power of a deity in the Shattered Kingdoms. Without the Divine Spark, or the energy of a Divine Spark, an entity cannot empower its followers with divine magic.
Not all Deities have their own Divine Spark. Most of the Prime Deities have their own Divine Spark, but many deities are made up of energy from other’s Divine Sparks. A deity that has their own Divine Spark can pass on some of the energy from their Divine Spark to create other deities, such as Hulgrend.
Hulgrend has his own Divine Spark, but when he created a progeny, the Great Wyrm Stantorrik, he used the energy from his own Divine Spark and passed on some of that energy to Stantorrik. In this instance Stantorrik would still be a deity because he is comprised of energy from a Divine Spark.
No one knows how many Divine Sparks there are in the Shattered Kingdoms, in fact people are not even sure which deities do or do not have their own Divine Spark. For example, it is common knowledge that Hulgrend has his own Divine Spark and that his progeny, Stantorrik doesn’t have a Divine Spark, as he was made from the energies of Hulgrend’s Divine Spark.
In general, it is thought that those deities who have their own Divine Spark are more powerful than those who are only made up of other individuals’ Divine Spark. This is not always the case as not all Divine Sparks were created with the same level of power. Also, when a Divine Spark’s energy is used to create another Deity, it is thought that the Deity whose Divine Spark the energies came from is reduced in power, as the Divine Spark’s power has partially been transferred to a new Deity. There is no sure way to gauge the power of a deity solely through whether they have their own Divine Spark or if they were created by the energy of another’s Divine Spark.
