Brunhild and Sigurd

There are several different version of this story told by the Fustir-Gost. Each with different endings, but this is the most common one.

Brunhilde, also known as Brunhilde, Brunhilda or Brynhild amongst other names. She is a beautiful shieldmaiden (Valkyrie) princess. Valkyrie means a ''chooser of the slain.'' They were the god Odin's special attendants and battle maidens.

Brunhild is said to be the daughter of Odin and Frigg, and one of the most powerful of the Valkyries. Brunhild as the other Valkyries vowed to remain virgins and always obey Odin in exchange for immortality and invulnerability. They also have the honor and responsibility of traveling to Middle-Earth to choose worthy heroes among the battlefield dead, and the once chosen the warriors would be flown by the Valkyries over the Bifrost, and on to Valhalla. Valhalla was the heavenly home of Odin’s fallen army, and the hall for those who had died heroically in battle.

In one fateful battle, Brunhild strikes down Hjalmgunnar, leaving the hero king Angar victorious, a king who had been promised victory by Odin. Angered by Brunhild’s rash action, Odin orders her to take a husband as punishment. Yet Brunhild had sworn that she would only marry a man who could overcome her in combat—a nearly impossible man to find. Frustrated, Odin casts Brunhild into a magic sleep and surrounds her with a ring of fire. In time, the hero Sigurd, also known as Sigvard or Siegfried, fearlessly rides through the flames to awaken and rescue her, while on another quest. Sigurd was a legendary hero whom also had accieved immortality through his heroics.

Sigurd rides through the flames, and cuts off her chainmail and frees Brunhild with a kiss. They fall in love and Sigurd proposes with the ring Andvaranaut. He then promises to return after his quest is complete.

Siguard travelled to the court of King Gjúki and Queen Grimhildr with proof of his heroic deeds. Queen Grimhildr found out about his proposal to the maiden Brynhild, so she ensourcelled Sigurd that made him forget about his love for Brynhild. Then she gave him a love potion so Sigurd would fall iun love with Gudrun, her daughter, while Brynhildr would marry her son Gunnar. However, Brynhildr refused to marry Gunnar, as she would only marry a man who could cross the ring of flames she put up around herself. So Grimhildr talked Sigurd into helping Gunnar marry Brynhildr. Since Sigurd was the only one who could cross the flames, he and Gunnar switched bodies, so Gunnar's body could cross the flames. Brynhildr then married Gunnar, because she made a promise to Odin.

When Brynhildr learned that Sigurd had betrayed her with Gudrun, not knowing he had been bewitched into doing so by Grimhildr, she was out to get revenge. She ended up killing Sigurd and Sigurds infant child. Grimhildr then made Gudrun marry Brynhildr's brother Atli. Gudrun did not want to marry him because she knew he would end up killing her brother.
