Calypsos & Viviens
Calypsos is a vampiric, mermaid-like race that often uses water magic. Viviens are a Calypsos subgroup usually found in the Isles' freshwater. One of the Vivien ancients is the keeper of the well-known sword in the Isles' history, and the lake's Guardian. Calypsos and Viviens might have some ties to the Fae but are detached from its political intrigue and various customs. However, they are still fond of the Fae and will work seamlessly with them against a common foe.
Basic Information
Anatomy
In their human form, we have a humanoid form and skeletal structure. When they go into their true forms, we have the skeleton structure of a partial aquatic animal or fish and the partial skeleton structure of a humanoid. It depends on the kind of aquatic animal the Calypso or Vivien is if there are numerous other limbs or not. In some instances, such as the anglerfish, the female is bigger than the male and the male is attached to the female in some form.
Biological Traits
The average life span is 4,000 years. They can push their life expectancies a little further despite the water pollution. Their height in true form depends on the kind of aquatic animal they are. Whale calypsos are larger than their human forms. Average weight is different between the human form and their true form. Same with average length. Again, it greatly depends on the aquatic animal they are. Eels, skates, fish, and some stingray calypsos can also manipulate lightning.
Genetics and Reproduction
The species is humanoid and usually reproduces sexually. Some types such as the anglerfish calypso might reproduce somewhat differently, considering the female is vastly larger than the male. In those cases, they will reproduce similarly to the aquatic animal they are of. The same is for the viviens. The gestation is up to 8 1/2 to 9 months for a baby to form. Doctors are informed what kind of calypso and vivien the individual is before a couple tries for children.
Growth Rate & Stages
An individual increases in age every one year. Like humans, they enter adolescence when they are around nine years old through thirteen years old. Maturation lasts well into their twenties around the twenty-four years mark for males and twenty-two years mark for females. They stop aging from there on.
Ecology and Habitats
The optimal environment for the species is along the shorelines and islands when in human form. There are underwater settlements within the water. They are better off in the bodies of water they surround for their own health. Many try to climb the echelons in jobs to earn a good amount of money so they have a private beach. While others attempt to swim in the water during off-season. Many calypsos and viviens need the water to survive.
Dietary Needs and Habits
It depends on the aquatic animal or fish that the Calypsos and Viviens are. Some are herbivorous, while others are omnivorous or carnivorous. They do their best to blend in with human society on land. They do not have to when they live in the underwater cities and settlements. Much of the Calypsos and Viviens feed off of blood as well, preferably human blood.
Biological Cycle
Some can take the heat and some can take the cold. They blend in with society, however, they populate the shorelines of many bodies of water. Some getting out of the water are mystified by the changes of the seasons, especially the leaves shedding in autumn and the flowers blooming in spring. Some even come from underwater cities and settlements. Some coral and marine plants have similar seasonal changes to above the surface and on land. It depends on the temperature of the water. For Viviens and Calypsos, it depends on the kind of fish or aquatic animal they are.
Behaviour
It really depends on the calypso or vivien. Some are ambitious and take on leadership roles. They are often courageous and take risks with a smile. While others, are shy and hide from strangers or keep their noses down. It really depends on the individual and the kind of calypso or vivien they are. They are strong willed and will not take their predators bullshit when they are the prey or being antagonized. They are like sailors and mariners on the water; strong-willed, no-nonsense, and practiced in what they will do in retaliation.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Depends on the aquatic animal half of the calypso and vivien. For example, orca calypsos are part of a pod and are ruled by a matriarch.
Domestication
They can domesticate themselves, but their love of the water outshines most priorities.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Scales, an understanding of the electrocution of predators, cadavers for understanding anatomy, skeletons, and parts of hybrids that can be used for regents in alchemy, science, and medicine.
Facial characteristics
It depends on the calypso or viviens. Some fish have odd snouts and noses. It may or may not appear in the humanoid part of a calypso's or vivien's true form. As an example, Asari is an elephantfish, some of his people may have the snout that gave them the name while others have an aetheric version of it. The trunklike snout is part of an average elephantfish's mouth.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
They are all over the globe in various water bodies, even the ones you are not sure they are in. They are definitely in there. Viviens are found in the freshwater bodies on the Isles.
Average Intelligence
Their average intelligence is about on par with other humans, but they have heightened intelligence beyond the average human genius.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Heightened senses, especially underwater. Being able to breathe underwater. Swimming is greatly heightened thanks to their aquatic animal parts. Some calypsos and viviens can do echolocation depending on what aquatic animal they are. They excel in water magic and calling in the storms at sea and out on the water. They also call upon tsunamis and can cause other natural disasters as necessary. They do have arcane senses but they need to activate it with invocation instead of simply just using it like a regular psychic. Some calypsos and viviens can use lightning manipulation.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
The usual plus any parasitic species that attack humans and other land-dwelling inhumans. Barnacles can inconvenience a great deal of calypsos.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
In ancient times, names were usually given to a child via the Calypso language. Names were given solely based on the power, strength, beauty, and majesty of the bodies of water in the world. The children will get to an age where they will pick out a human alias based on the names used by humans in various ancient cultures. This is usually around the start of their adolescence. In those days, the child can transform into their human form and explore the land above the surface. Once they are done with their traveling or survived their lessons in the human world, they come back to the water and their family and pick an adult name in the Calypso language.
This is not the case anymore as many calypsos and viviens have escaped the water for their survival from fishers and paranormal researchers. Many now choose names that are indicative of the human culture they have settled into.
