Wheel Speaker
Wheel Speaker is the rekettan term for naval captains, so as to not mix and confuse them with their military captains that may commonly travel aboard the same ships. The Wheel Speaker is both a lighter sense of commander, and the main person responsible for the upkeep and attending their ship. If a ship is poorly managed, misdirected in course, or otherwise lacking, the Wheel Speaker is to tend to those needs or receive the harshest critique and punishments. However there is an occasional power issue if the Wheel Speaker is not aligned by the same faction as a military captain, such as Blade or Rum playing as guests to a ship from Crown Salt. The captain is still supposed to hold maximum jurisdiction over their job, duties, and people, but sometimes the Wheel Speaker feels entitled to interfere.
Career
Career Progression
As with most jobs in the empire, its difficult to move out from where one was born and raised to steer into. However as they are of some power and status, a Wheel Speaker may interfere or become tasked with jobs that would fall more into military and captain circumstances, and may be promoted if there is an opening or grand task fulfilled.
Other Benefits
The pay is often good per use of the ship, and its needs. The ship itself, is also technically under the ownership of the Wheel Speaker, and can serve as either their choice of home, or a second home to keep and cherish, whereas most commoners might be so low as to even plead for a staying spot inside it.
Perception
Demographics
Wheel Speaker is strictly a Rekettan term, whereas others will use different terms to explain a military captain apart, or even lack the naval capacity to be concerned with it. However within the empire itself, its also segregated sometimes as an honor between set Houses. Only Rum, Salt, and in an exceptional circumstance Tulip make varied use of the identity. So there is no such role in places like Hunt, and they must occupy the space with a Wheel Speaker of another imperial faction.
