Hen

This article pertains to the Reketta slang, not the actual fowl.   Hen has developed a strange terminology across reketta culture. It was once thought to be used merely as a way of speaking between male and female, pertaining to a mature female of their race, akin to Woman, Cow, Bitch, Vixen, etc. It likely was then quickly associated with early matriarchal habits, where females would hold unfertilized eggs back and make them earn it, and be delighted to lay future eggs for more leverage. So akin to the fowl, they laid eggs and were known to guard them, and while reketta may dispute they came up with the term first, the agricultural term applies further away from them.   Future developments have lead the word a bit astray, especially once the empire was fired up. Reketta began refering to hens as those more poor, trying to escape military labor and service by claiming they had eggs to take care of, and would try to produce offspring with anyone to prove that point. It quickly adapted more to be associated with both prostitutes, poverty, and in some cases was used in better terms with 'professional hen' breeders that noble Houses wanted as higher quality genetics. House Feather were among the first to blur the lines, and more closely cultivate habits of brothels.   Even now, Hen still makes a strange mix of terminology that is highly sensitive to context. Some still conservatively use the word for any reketta female, while others use it between marks of either shame or attractiveness. Its often in the way its said, and even a professional Hen might say the term with a sour taste as they disavow the actions of the ragged street form of 'Hen'. The rest of this article will be speaking more strictly of those that are hired in professionally for a reputable House.

Career

Qualifications

Often its all in their looks and luck. Full feathers, or silky scales, ornate horns, and vibrant colors and patterns are all considered to be of high value. Some do still require a certain show of intelligence, but this testing is more minimal and based to reflexive thinking, like how quick they can solve a small puzzle, or recite from imperial culture. Once selected for the role, they're often forbidden from removing or trimming their own plumage, or filing claws, as they strictly wish to allow this to be taught or dependent on another to ensure they don't 'ruin' anything.

Career Progression

When they're too old, and otherwise retire from other circumstances like injury or health issues, the Hen is often treated like most other serviced but retired members - save for a large gap in respect or tangible benefits in experience. They won't be as decorated or celebrated as war heroes, or deep educators, but are still allowed to live in peace and splendor, often taking to arts of music, painting, poetry, or possibly doing some later tutoring over more minor tasks or slave-keeping.

Other Benefits

  • Protected away from dangerous tasks, or conscripted military service.
  • Groomed, and given easy education - especially in regards to arts.
  • In some cases, fed lavish sweets as most regard a fuller tail as healthier.
