John Barrett
John spends time with his father or the man he believes to be his father in the study. He spends much of his time, lying under the desk, or before the fire while his father works. He plays quietly with wooden toys, his favorite being a carved wooden horse and some tintype soldiers.
He becomes curious when his father shoots him out of the study. Since he is used to having full reign of the house, he finds a way to eavesdrop on the conversation that he has been excluded from where usually he would not have been. This is how he came to be in the attic.
John is especially concerned because his sister/aunt is his particular favorite, and she tends to spoil him. This is incredibly out of character for Cora because she is considered to be so selfish and on feelings. The porous display is generally a defense as she has more exposure to her father's antics. She is generally angry and has no record. She finds it incredibly unfair that she has to suffer so her family can maintain the expected lifestyle. She is not sure if they are aware, but because of her father's imposition, she has no way to verify. She does feel strongly that Arthur the second, her older brother should do something to help her, and she doesn’t understand why he hasn’t as he does play a large part in managing the estate. She is unaware that he only manages the day-to-day fun function and has no input say or awareness around financial matters.
