The Underworld
Ruled by Ohrer, a fallen quasi-diety, the Underworld is composed of three different hells which each have their own flavor of tourment and suffering. The Throne is where the palace of Ohrer lies as well as a majority of the devils of the planes. The Pits are largely occupied by armies of demons and devils constantly at war with each other in battles that seemingly last an eternity. The hell known as Darkness is where the demons currently reside which largely is full of horrors hidden by the magical darkness that few lights can pierce.
Geography
The hells are gigantic land masses that float in a flaming void keeping many from leaving it. The hells are also surrounding each other with the Throne being the center or the core, the Pits sitting in the middle of the two, and Darkness below the other two and surrounding the other two.
The Throne is what one may typically think of when they picture the Underworld, pillars of flame errupting from the ground and a harsh environment. Those who die in the mortal planes may have their souls banished to this hell if they made deals with any devil. Typically those who are sent to the Throne after dying are then submitted to eternal torture by either fighting against hordes of demons or through being a slave to the devils. Since their souls cannot be destroyed, there is no death in this combat, no matter how destroyed the vessel they occupy becomes.
The Pits were once stone islands floating between the other hells but have become large landmasses of stone and corpses packed together suspended in the air. This means that there are not many who stay in this hell permanantley though there are those who benefit from scrapping the remains of dead fighters. Many mortal souls are sent here as fighters for the devils of The Throne.
Everything that is not considered one of the other two hells is a part of Darkness which stretches beyond imagination. The further one delves into the hell, the more sinister and chaotic the demons they will find. Originally created by Gregor, the demons were sent to invade the Throne and take it from Ohrer and the other devils. They now reside in Darkness where they prepare full on assaults to carry out their fundamental purpose. While it is easy to wind up a servant to the devils of the Throne, being sent to Darkness is only for those who have meddled with the gods and have been purposefully punished. In its depths lie horrors that neither mortals or gods can describe.
Localized Phenomena
In the Underworld, magic seems to be changed by the sheer amount of necrotic energy. Casters will find that though their spells do the same amount of damage there are some modifications that are purely cosmetic. These are at the player or DM's transgression, for example a fireball may glow a necrotic green flame now if they are in the pits or maybe just a different colored flame due to magical distortion. Additionally, players who may be use radiant energy will find it possible to convert any radiant damage to necrotic energy from the air.
Climate
The three hells have incredibly different environments, ranging from varying extremes. The Throne is incredibly hot, to the point where mortals traveling through it will suffer from exhaustion more quickly. This accompanied with storms of fire and pillars of flames reaching to the sky makes the Throne incredibly dangerous for mortals who are not accustomed to the plane. Since the Pit is only stone and corpses suspended in a void, it often experiences earthquakes, tornadoes, and some slight flame tornadoes that flow from the Throne. The climate in Darkness is not well known since few have entered and even fewer have left, but what is known that it is incredibly cold but can fall victim to many natural disasters experienced on the Material Plane.
Fauna & Flora
Anything considered to be nature by those from the Material Plane would likely be found on the Throne where flowers known as flameblossoms which infernal creatures can eat to sustain themselves but those whose lineage has not grown accustomed to eating them will feel like their insides are burning. Additionally, there is a patch known as The Forest of the Lost where those who tried to abandon their post in the infernal army are petrified and turned into trees that seem to grow leaves black as coal. In the trees if one looks close enough they can find the face of the individual who is petrified inside it.
The other two hells contain slim floral life due to the nature of them though there are some plants found in Darkness. One are soul buds which as the name suggests are what becomes of mortals who try to explore this hell. Though they are called buds, the flowers tend to grow to be as tall as sunflowers on the Material Plane. If harvested these flowers wither away within 24 hours but an individual could be ressurected through the flower.
Natural Resources
The hells each have their own resource(s) that at some point may have been given to the Material Realm leading some brave merchants and thieves to storm the plane in hopes of finding something valuable. The most common resource exclusive to the hells is Infernal Metal, an alloy made of the metals from the Pits that due to being trampled over for years has become quite durable. In addition, armor made of the material can provide the one who dawns it resistant to fire damage. A more rare resource of the plane is Bane, a poison that draws out the darkest parts of one's soul and quickly destroying their insides causing the individual to transform into a demon within a day of drinking it. The poison can be found in a small pool within Darkness, the pond of the poison glows with a purple energy and has a foul smell of death. Though Bane has been collected by demons, devils, and mortals for centuries the pond seemingly regains whatever it loses.
History
After being corrupted by the Pearl of Insight, Ohrer began flying away from all living things so he would no longer hear the agony of their minds. Eventually after crossing the planes he found a realm of empty space where he built his palace. When Ohrer had arrived the Thrown was the size of a continent, floating in the abyss and so he founded it as the Underworld. Though Ohrer was alone to begin with, he was still a threat to both sides in the Great God Wars, but specifically the side of Gregor who Ohrer was given the power to defeat.
Gregor at this point needed an army of soldiers and though he hard mortals who were alligned to destroy civilization before it could even defend itself but many of them had died early on in the war. So, Gregor tried to bring the corpses of his followers back to life by attempting to copy the ritual he had seen the goddess Solar do before. The result was terrifying, the necrotic energy that Gregor was a source of mixed with the radiant energy of the ritual caused the bodies of the soldiers to contort into unimaginable horrors. Gregor did not care about the results of the ritual aside from the fact that he now had an army to send into battles, and an undying one at that.
With his new army composed of what he called demons, he first tried to kill Ohrer in the Underworld in the year -81. This assault would begin the eternal conflict of the hells, but at this point there was only Darkness and the Throne. As the fights waged on, Gregor would begin to task some demons with leaving the Underworld and instead attacking the Material Plane, though they would always be tasked to return to Darkness. As the conflict waged on, the Throne began to crumble, creating the floating landmasses known as the Pits.
In order to fight off the demons, Ohrer was forced to make a deal with the infernals. The original infernals were celestial beings or other champions of Solar who had fallen from her graces due to their evil nature. The two sides then became the devils/infernals of the Throne, and the demons of Darkness. Their fighting has continued through the ages even though Gregor no longer commands the demons, they simply seek to destroy the Throne and take control of the overworld.
