Lagomus

Lagomus, known by most as moon bunnies, are small fuzzy creatures native to the moon Elamsha. They feed on the blue lichen that grown on that moon, and burrow into the lunar soil to escape from predators. However, when a dedicated harpy mage reached the moon, these creatures had their first contact with giant life. With subsequent trips, scholars managed to bring a population back to Savinaru for study, though this required specialized environments due to the atmospheric difference between Elamsha and Savinaru. Hybrids were created by crossbreeding moon bunnies with normal bunnies, producing lagomus who could survive on Savinaru. These adorable little creatures quickly became desired as exotic and expensive pets, though with the dawn of hybrids they became more accessible as pets, much to the delight of pet owners across Savinaru.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Lagomus look very similar to normal rabbits. They have four legs, though they are designed less for speed and more for digging. This includes a large pair of digging claws on their front, similar to a badger. They also share the rabbit's large ears, which are generally up in the air, though can lay flat against their back while they are underground. They also have large front teeth like rabbits, designed to scrape the blue lichen they feed on off rocks. Their fur is very soft, with a blue hue coming from their diet.

Ecology and Habitats

Lagomus evolved in a very alien environment, where the atmosphere was a dozen feet high and the land is dry. There is water on the moon, though it is much sparser than on Savinaru. The Lagomus are low on the moon's food chain, leading to a burrowing lifestyle. They dig in the lunar soils, forming burrows much like their terrestrial counterparts, coming out to graze on the lichen that covers much of Elamsha. They always have their ears up for predators however. They are predated by a small species of wolf, which is still bigger than them. They also have to contend with other lunar beasts, such as frogs who have taken over the crocodile's ambusher niche and terrestrial crabs that wander around scavenging. While the lunar ecosystem is less diverse than Savinaru's, the same laws of nature apply to this miniature ecosystem.

Additional Information

Domestication

When people heard there were cute little creatures on the moon, there was a push by the wealthiest of society to try and have one as a pet. Show off their status by having a beast from the moon in their home. While a handful of species were brought back, the lagomus were the most popular, being deemed the cutest of the bunch. The first few lagomus brought back died from the dense and rich atmosphere before people realized what was happening, leading to specialized enclosures for these exotic pets. However, thanks to breeding efforts with terrestrial rabbits, a hybrid was created that retained most of the lagomus appearance while having a physiology capable of surviving on Savinaru. This allowed people to have a lagomus as a pet without building an expensive custom environment so their pet didn't collapse. For a time, they remained the purview of the rich, though as these hybrids continued living and breeding a few inevitable escaped. While they were unprepared for the giants of the wilds and so very few exist out there, other classes managed to capture them and eventually they spread across dozens of cultures as pets.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Lagomus possess a weak form of tremorsense, that gives them the ability to detect surrounding creatures through vibrations the ground. This sense works best when the lagomus is huddled in a burrow, though it sometimes give an early warning when out on the surface. Their large ears also give them excellent hearing, which is their main sense for detecting danger.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking

Lagomus fur is blue tinted, from the blue lichen they sustain themselves off of. Lagomus primarily fed off of other plants lose this hue, becoming a colorless white. Those who own lagomus usually either keep a patch of this blue lichen or buy a specially designed kibble that includes it to keep that iconic blue fur.
