Valenki Boots

Valenki boots are felt boots made of soft sheep wool, mostly worn by peasants in the northern parts of Ruslavia. They are very warm and snuggly, but since the felt is not waterproof, they normally have a strip of leather on the sole to keep them dry and to protect the sole from wear and tear. Valenki are said to have healing properties, and wearing them lowers the duration of a hangover by one hour (to a minimum of 1 hour).

Significance

It is irroniously believed that if a young girl throws her valenki in the air on the first night of Koliada, the direction the toe lands in is the direction that she should look to find a husband.   Since the boot is seen by some as a simple and coarse style of footwear, compared to the more elegant shoes and boots worn in the wealthier cities, the word "valenok", meaning a singular valenki boot, can be slang for an unsophisticated, dumb person.
