The Golden Egg
Summary
It is said that the Honoured Lady was born from a golden egg which fell from the sky, alongside her brother General Nikolai.
These blessed children were then raised as the wards of a local nobleman alongside many other children. They often took refuge in churches which is how they learned about the holy orders which brought them to the attention of the Old Gods. This blessing resulted in them being able to save the country.
Historical Basis
There is both written and archaeological evidence that the Honoured Lady and her brother were real people and that their battles were fought.
The myth around their birth is almost certainly made up in its entirety a few centuries after their deaths, this was probably to give a divine origin to our country's saviours rather than to give the impression to the general population that they too could be capable of greatness.
Spread
This myth is often told when people ask about the origins of the characters in the story of the old wars.
Cultural Reception
This divine origin of saviours is important to our culture as this principle has been used to prop-up the aristocracy and monarchy for many centuries.
In Literature
There are several poems and stories based on this myth, usually in connection with the grander story of the great victory that they helped to bring about.
In Art
My favourite picture related to this myth is located in the Southern Reception Room at the Royal Palace. It shows the children sat in the fragments of the golden egg shell. The artist used real gold dust mixed with the paint to make the shell fragments glow in the light and the babies have a calm look on their faces as they look only at each other. Born in the midst of war they are calm, I always found that reassuring.
