Week 1

Assignment 1

Think about ways the theme of Nourishment affects your world. Do people generally have what they need? What happens when they don’t?

The common people in my world often struggle to meet their basic needs. Long winters make farming difficult and on going conflicts make trade almost impossible so imported goods are expensive to the point of being out of reach for anyone except the highest nobility.

The lack of food has led to mass starvation among the poor. This has led the nobility to lean more to charity with the establishment of public kitchens to provide food and orphanages to look after children left behind by conflict and famine, however this varies drastically between region.

If you found any outdated articles in your world, update the most important ones now! Do the same with your worldbuilding meta.

I have added to my world meta to add more details to some sections. I have also added to the Feeding of the spirits article from last year's Summer Camp which I have been meaning to add to for some time.

I have also been working on reorganising the articles in this world (this is a very slow process but I am making progress) to make articles easier to find.

Week 2

Assignment 1

Look at the cultures and areas you’ll focus on for Summer Camp, and think about how their past shaped them.

The People of the Mountains are a nomadic culture, they find their roots in several areas around the Northern Mountain Range but mostly with each other. The close knit culture has been torn apart by conflict in the area which means that they have been scattered to many countries across the world, despite this their roots still bind them.

The Faeris find their roots across the world as they are born across the world. Due to the persecution they face they find sanctuary at the Shadow palace, the only place they are truly safe.

Assignment 2

Go to your world’s homepage and imagine you’re a new reader discovering the setting for the first time. What should you change to make the experience more engaging?

I have made some changes to my world's homepage which I have been planning on doing for a while, so hooray for Summer Camp for prompting me to actually get around to it. This world was created for the soul reason of allowing people to explore the world rather than for any additional project (yet) so I definitely need to make the world more navigable.

I am also working on my article organisation system to help with this. To start with this, I have added book covers to some of my categories, and will begin moving some articles around and the like in the next few days.

Assignment 3

Find your earliest worldbuilding project. What mistakes did you make that you want to avoid? What good ideas from those early days can you integrate into your current project? Remember to take a moment to be proud of how far you've come!

I have always enjoyed writing stories but this was the first world that I felt needed to be built to a significant degree. Most of the features of that original idea have already been added to this, but World Anvil is definitely a more coherent means of organising my notes than the dozens of note cards that are still in a box under my bed.

Week 3

Assignment 1

What transformations and adaptations have the people in your world gone through? What changes are going on right now… and who is trying to stop them?

The landscape of my continent has changed drastically in recent years with the creation and then destruction of The Void. The accounts given in this world discuss the events around this creation and destruction around historical accounts, there have also been revolutions (successful and unsuccessful) in recent history which have driven societal change.

Currently, Tsar Mikhail Petrovich is trying to reform his countries system of governance but this is opposed by his advisors. Our historian (the Tsar's sister Ekaterina Petrovna) is supportive of this change, but she is attempting to give a balanced view of current events.

Assignment 2

Choose a new genre, style, or author, and take a look at their art! Write what you learned from them and what inspired you.

This week, I have started reading Stargazers Salvation by A. R. Schilling which is more sci-fi-y than what I normally read even though it is still fantasy which is the genre I usually stick to. I enjoyed the idea of fated connections between characters and I would like to try and incorporate a similar idea into one of my world (I think this idea probably fits better with my world of Thornfield rather than this one.

Assignment 3

Read a couple of articles from the community, give them a like (and why not a sticker!), and write about what inspired you.

I haven't got around to reading any new articles this week, I am going to try to find time later but I have been really busy this week.

Week 4

Assignment 1

Think about current events that will have an impact the on the future. Who is working to create a specific kind of future?

Current and future events are a bit strange to think about in my world because my premise is that it is written by a historian recording the past. That said, current events will be useful to think about for contextualisation of history and the recording that Katya is able to make.

Currently, they are working to improve the state of the country for everyone as they emerge from conflict however this is (obviously) not without its struggles.

Assignment 2

Make sure everything’s ready—from your writing space to your writing schedule—for action before Summer Camp begins!

I should have a couple of hours to write each Wednesday, as I normally have. Since I have finished my exams I should hopefully have more time during the day as well, as I suddenly don't have twenty hours of homework and twenty hours of lesson time a week.

My writing space isn't much of an issue because I can write pretty much anywhere as long as I have my laptop or my phone for the actual writing (my laptop is still a godsend for anything which requires any sort of formatting).

I'm not sure if there is anything I need to research before starting because (painfully) I always resort to researching on the fly (forgive me, I know I have sinned). I already have the background for what I want to write, but specifics are never my strong suit until I get to them.

I have a lot of stub articles, some of which I hope to be able to expand upon during Summer Camp or after. (on my list of things to get round to, I just haven't had the time over the last year.)

Assignment 3

Who or what will help you achieve your goal? What will your sharing strategy be during Summer Camp?

I am hoping to share my summer camp progress here (because I will remember the notification button, I will I promise) and I have been trying to persuade my friends to have a look at my writing.
