Coronation

I remember Mikhail's coronation. I was eleven and I got to carry his train alongside Nikolai, wearing my pretty dress which Marya had made me. He almost fell over under the weight of the Imperial Crown even though he had tried to practice bearing the weight. Back in our rooms later we joked that the weight of the Crown was meant to be symbolic of the weight of ruling the country.

History

The tradition started as a way of showing who was the new Tsar with a simple religious ceremony.

Over the years, the ceremonies have become more and more elaborate and further removed from their religious origins in favour of a day of excess and the display of wealth.

Execution

In its simplest form, the coronation required the placement of a crown on the new Tsar's head. In ancient times the Day Crown was the only one used, a band of gold that is worn at all times to show the position of the Tsar. A few hundred years ago this was deemed not enough and so the Imperial Crown was created which fit over the smaller crown as a display of wealth at the coronation and at other special occasions.

Over the years, more features have been included in the coronation including the wearing of expensive ceremonial clothing, parades through the town, and the presenting of more and more jewels and gold.

Some monarchs have chosen to use the coronation as a way to display their wealth to the people as well, giving them a day off and distributing rich food and drink among them to endear them to their new ruler.

Components and tools

The Day Crown is the only essential component of the coronation as this is the symbol of the Tsar.

The use of the Imperial Crown has been common for centuries as a way of showing the magnificence of the country.

Ceremonial clothing with different outfits for different parts of the ceremony are a newer and very expensive part of the ceremony.

Observance

The ceremony takes place at the next summer solstice after the death of the previous Tsar. Now, the day crown will be worn by the new Tsar from the moment of his father's death as someone is needed to over see the day to day running of the country, and the coronation is the bestowing of full powers with the use of the Imperial Crown.

In times of minority, the ceremony will take place on the solstice after the Tsars sixteenth birthday as this is the age they are thought to be capable of ruling for themselves.
