Bone Knife
I write this entry with my own sat on my desk, it was a present from a friend I met on my travels. She made it for me once I let slip I was celebrating my sixteenth birthday while I was with them.
When she gave me it, she also told me about this items history for her culture which I will now relay to you, if you will let me.
History
It is not known when these knives were first designed or by whom, but these blades have been a common fixture in these communities for many centuries, some families have very ancient examples which are kept safe and are used only on the most special occasions.
They have been in continuous usage for many centuries, new blades being made for each person for their sixteenth birthday and used by them throughout their lives.
Significance
They are given as a gift from parents to their children when they reach sixteen years old. Often, they will make it themselves (the design is simple enough) and can be very heavily decorated to suit the recipients personal style.
Usage
The hollow bone handle is often used to hold sewing needles and thread so that repair materials are always on hand to fix thing when they are damaged. Some people, usually younger women, will also keep colourful thicker threads which they can use for embroidery decoration.
The blades are also used for a wide variety of uses, including cutting fabric for clothing and housewares and the preparing of animal hides when the hunters have brought something back.
They are very common and are a daily fixture of life for the Eagle Hunters, as they can be used for many daily tasks.
The handle is made of a hollowed bone, with removable wooden covers over each end so the handle can be used for storage.
