Vittania
The inner half of the island of Vittania is cool; dotted with lakes, rivers, and boreal forests, and separated by hilltop meadows and glistening peaks. Timber and stone are bountiful, and the native cervid and kenku have utilized the region's natural resources to effectively build beautiful cities that blend with the natural landscape. The outer half, however, is home to the fearsome Shorn Wastes, a stark contrast to the serene beauty of the inner side.
Forest Towns
The local Vittanians have tried to preserve the beauty of their land where they can - including within their cities and settlements. Towns are typically constructed around natural features in any given area. Boulders, streams, groves, and hills all become architectural challenges to work around, rather than remove. Walking the streets of a city like Yorel leads a travler to wind underneath mighty pines, around rocky outcrops, and down narrow alleys as houses squish together in small clearings. Even the most populated cities in Vittania feel like remote villages compared to those in Balveda or Erenthill, all due to their seamless incorporation of nature.Natural Industry
Though Vittania is ample in natural resources, great care has been taken here to protect the landscape and natural bounty as much as possible. If you build a lumbermill, you must ensure that you plant one tree for every single one cut down. Stone quarries can't grow beyond a certain size, and metal mines can be shut down the moment they pollute water. Critics of these laws point to the success of Erenthill, similarly blessed by natural gifts and tremendously more powerful economically. Supporters also point to Erenthill, instead mentioning the hillsides torn open by mining and forests chopped for ships that still haven't regrown. Aside from the material resources, Vittania is also the original home of the Moa, a splendidly useful bird that has become the most common riding and pulling beast across the entire World. It's unclear when the bird was first domesticated, but some ancient cervid sources mention living alongside the moa, putting the date at least a few thousand years ago. After the Law was signed and species began trading and cooperating in earnest, moa were quickly brought to other regions, proving just as useful elsewhere as they had in Vittania.Past the Gate
As you head towards the outer side of the island, you'll begin to see a ridge of mighty mountains forming in the distance. To the locals, these mountains are known as The Crest, and the narrow break between them as The Gate. Beyond the Crest lies the Shorn Wastes, where few venture willingly and foolishly. Above the peaks, you can see the endless ash billowing from the earth, let loose by volcanic fissures and magma streams. The winds, thankfully, carry the smoke and ash further out towards the Silent Sea, protecting the Vittanians from choking on deadly air or drinking poisoned water. The town of Ashpoint lies just south of the Gate, the last stop before crossing into the Wastes.Notable Places:
