Unknowably deep and dark, no one fishes, sails, or lives near the waters of the Silent Sea if they can help it. Magic sinks to the bottom of these waters, and there seems to be nothing out across the black void they stretch to. Travel is only recommended along the coast, as the ocean gets shockingly deep not far from shore.
Dark Depths
Less than a mile from land, the shelf underneath suddenly plummets, and the waters below seem to stretch endlessly down into darkness. Nobody has been to the bottom, and no one is brave enough to try. Along with the darkness, the waters here are cold. Magic is so diluted in the infinite vastness of the Silent Sea that there's little warmth or sustenance to be found. Perhaps due to the ample room- or perhaps due to another more worrying reason - the life that does live in the Silent Sea grows to enormous sizes. Those who fish these waters need only to catch one or two fish to feed their families for a week or more, but they're just as likely to see a shape below in the darkness that makes their fur stand on end. Cataloguing or studying these giant sea beasts is nearly impossible, so local reports of what they look like and how they act are all researchers have to go on.
What Lies Beyond
Stories have long been told about lands far beyond the Silent Sea, waiting to be discovered by brave (or foolhardy) explorers. Several creation stories and myths include ancestors arriving from some distant land across the darkness as well. The Farlands, discovered a few hundred years ago, are the only land or features ever located within the Silent Sea. Still, once every few decades, some expedition decides to take sail or flight and head into the murky nothing. Some return, starved and scared. Most are never heard from again.
