Altamalo

One of the highest altitude cities on the solid earth of the World, Altamalo's frigid air and razor-sharp winds put off many a traveler or merchant, but those who brave the heights find a truly breathtaking place.
The climb to arrive here is treacherous. Originally built by the native aarakocra who could simply fly into town, non-avian species must instead make a dangerous and winding journey from lower-altitude settlements to reach the peak Altamalo rests upon. Airships and other modern conveniences have made this journey far easier, but the old roads still remain for those who must use them. Much of the city is constructed from heavy stone bricks and has a rather dull color, but the locals do their best to show pride in their home, and often hang colored flag ropes, chimes, and other aesthetic touches to liven up the town. The city is virtually impenetrable as well, and put an end to its only siege in less than four days. Technically, Altamalo still isn't part of any other government or broader community, but the locals don't seem to mind much either way as long as they're left to their business.

Points of interest

  • Wingrider Academy: The original rookery where the Mountain Hunter Saqra was domesticated, the Wingrider Academy is still the largest school dedicated to the art of saqra raising and riding. The Academy is a collection of mighty towers built of solid granite, with sturdy pine perches and landing platforms for saqra extending in all directions. It can comfortably house several hundred of the birds and their riders-to-be, as well as the master riders and a permanent staff. Getting accepted to the academy is notoriously difficult - the masters who live and work here are incredibly selective about a new student's potential, and bringing in other breeds of saqra is considered extremely taboo.
