April 19th, 1775: The military event that began the American Revolution, when British regulars went to Concord to seize munitions and attempted to arrest outspoken activists. Local militias responded and chased the regulars back into Boston.
April 19th, 1775: After the battles of Lexington and Concord the British regulars retreated to Boston, where they remained for nearly a year. The local militias remained outside the city for the duration of the period. Some skirmishes took place during the siege, though only one major engagement took place.
June 17th, 1775: A battle in which American forces initially repelled British forces at Breed's Hill, until ammunition ran out and forced a retreat. Despite the loss, the Americans inflicted heavy casualties.
July 2nd, 1776: Congress votes to declare independence from Great Britain. This leads to the creation of the Declaration of Independence, which, though dated July 4th, 1776, would not be signed until August 2nd, 1776.
September 26th, 1777: The British take possession of the city of Philadelphia, the capital of the rebelling colonies and where Congress was meeting.
