Elijah Fulton is one of the main characters in Honor of a Gentleman.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Elijah joined the Continental Army in 1776 after having spent several years commanding the local militia, an honor he earned after serving in the French and Indian War. He was wounded at the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse in June of 1778, but chose not to resign in the hopes that he could still be of use to the war effort with possible employment outside of field work in the future. Being a part of the army helped to distract him from his personal challenges, including his struggles with loneliness.

Sexuality

Elijah has always been attracted to other men, but he forced himself to focus his attentions on women. He used militia service to distract himself from the expectations of marriage, and the fear of discovery kept him from being tempted by living among other men. At the conclusion of the French and Indian War, he finally accepted the need to marry. The relationship was difficult for him, however, and his wife, Sally, died shortly after the birth of their only child, who also died within hours of her mother. Since this, Elijah has chosen not to remarry, and he has also kept away from other men, even while serving in the army. Using 21st century terms, Elijah is homoromantic and demisexual.

Employment

Elijah joined the Continental Army in 1776, where his current rank is that of Major. He also operates a sheep farm from which he sells wool.

Mental Trauma

Elijah often struggles with the memories of what he witnessed in battle and at encampments. The events he has lived through have helped to change some of his views of the world and the war.

Morality & Philosophy

Elijah firmly believes that everyone should have the same opportunities in life regardless of personal history or the situations they are in.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Elijah has always believed that those with the ability to help others should do so. That is why he helps those he can, including the soldiers in the army and the less fortunate people in his town. He also feels that physical activity is good for the body and mind, as does as much work on his farm himself as he can. His injury in the war has made that more difficult, but he still does what he can.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Employees/Friends: Mary and Peter Woodworth

Guest/Lodger: Benjamin Edmonds

Family Ties

Elijah has no living family. His father died in the French and Indian War and his mother recently passed away while he was with the army. His wife died giving birth to their daughter, who also did not survive, in 1774.

Religious Views

Elijah once considered himself a devout Christian as a youth, but the more he has seen of the cruelties of war, the less devout he has become.

Social Aptitude

Military life taught Elijah how to command even the most difficult situation, but he also knows when to let go of the need to control. He can be kind and compassionate as often as he is commanding and confident.
