The Jiaozi
The Jiaozi is the official currency in The Wend Wall Most countries use various variations of the Standard Ordening Coin (SOC), stamped with images pleasing to their particular national taste. In the Wend Wall they have done away with metal coinage altogether. They instead use money made of paper.
The Juaozi was introduced following the Revolts of the Wall in an effort to isolate the Wend Wall from the economic and social currents of Renata at large. During that time, it was strongly suspected that traders from Apex who were prominent features in most Wend Wall ports had been spreading republican propaganda and had infected the people with a spirit of revolution.
The Juaozi is not backed by any metal currency and is not accepted anywhere outside the Wend Wall. The Juaozi is backed only by the authority of the god-emperor Hansu and most traders consider it merely a tool of the regime’s economic policy. As such the exchange rate of Juaozi to the Standard Ordening Coin is weak.
Traders entering the Wend Wall first experience the dreaded exchange of their hard-earned gold into paper. The horror of this event is only surpassed when leaving the Wend Wall and attempting to exchange this paper back into coin. Most travellers find their initial fortune cut down by a substantial margin in this way. This is among the many reason why travel to the Wend Wall from outside is not frequent.
All versions of the Jiaozi bears a prominent image of the Emperor in the upper right corner. Writing indicates where the note was printed and its value. There is also a short poem praising the emperor on each note. These poems change each year, and in this way the year that note was issued is made obvious. Each note further includes a serial number of letters and numbers, as well as various secret and nearly invisible designs. This is done to prevent falsification. The falsification of Jiaozi is punishable by the trial of the boats, a most cruel form of fatal torture.
