Composition
Manpower
The AEF is composed of several mercenary companies as well as citizen soldiers of the Republic. All in all the formation numbers around 10.000 soldiers under arms, with another 5 - 10.000 camp followers and suppliers.
Equipment
Being composed of many different mercenary companies and citizen soldiers there is a great variety of equipment. The army has siege engines in small numbers, and engineers to build more if needed.
Weaponry
Most men are armed and armored decently. Spears and pikes are the common weapons. About 20% of the army consists of cavalry of various types. Most men have some sort of sidearm, like a sword or dagger. There are several thousand crossbowmen with the army.
Vehicles
Thousands of horses, and ox-drawn wagons for supplies in their hundreds.
Structure
Lord commander Lucia di Valletta is in command of the combined AEF. Below her are various mercenary captains who are responsible for their own formations and the Lord High Lieutenant in command of the Apex citizen army. These all meet in the War Council to decide the armies moves.
Tactics
The army follows fairly conventional tactics. With Pikemen, Crossbowmen and Cavalry all knowing their place on the battlefield.
When faced with undead foes the army would adopt a pike and shot formation while the Cavalry would cycle charge and thin the hordes.
Training
The training received by the various parts of the army differs significantly.
Logistics
Logistical Support
The logistical base of the army is in Shiver Town where their winter supplies are kept, and granaries are stocked with their food.
Upkeep
Apex does not release information related to the upkeep of armed formations. Scholars estimate the upkeep of the army to be over 500.000 gp pr month including:
- ca 240.000 gp in pay for the common troops
- ca 180.000 gp for the cavalry
- ca 100.000 for food, weaponry, specialists, and logistics to keep the army supplied
Recruitment
The soldiers stem from Apex and Crimson Coast based mercenary companies, as well as citizen soldiers of Apex.
History
Sent to the Crimson Coast as a diplomatic middle finger by the Apex Republic to show of diplomatic superiority and to assert the Republic's influence on Haru.
