Apex City

Apex city is a city of extreme variety. Here can be found individuals of every sentient race in Renata. Humans are the most numerous, but dwarves, halflings, gnomes, and goliaths can all be found in significant numbers. Smaller populations of other races also live in the city.   Apex is the commercial capital of Renata. Merchants, sailors, shipwrights, and workers of all kinds make their living there. It is also the political capital of the Apex Republic. As such the government and all its associated politicians, bureaucrats, and hangers-on are based there. A significant portion of the Republican navy is based out of the city. As such there are normally thousands of sailors and soldiers based in the city.

Apex city is governed by a city council, elected for five-year terms. The council is headed by a mayor.

The inner city is encircled by an old wall dating back to the 14th century. However, this is of little defensive value. The city is protected from the seaside by its navy and huge naval guns. From the landward side it has little protection. It is assumed that if the enemies have been able to bring an army within sight of Apex the war has probably been lost already. At any rate a city the size of Apex cannot be easily defended anyway.

Notable Locations within Apex City   The Great Arsenal of Apex: A vast ship and weapons factory which can reputedly construct a warship in a single day.   The House of the Doge: A artfully decorated palace in which the Doge lives and hosts meeting of the Council of Ten.   The District of Art: A district in which prominent artists live on the government's expense.   Plaza Grande: The great market of the city, where everything can be had for a price, from the most mundane to the most exotic.   The Gardens of the Good Doge: A grand garden which was once the private property of a previous doge, but which was dedicated to the public on his death.   The Albron Memorial The former house of Albron the Allspeaking has been turned into a memorial to the dead god.   The Palace Of Freedom This Grand building stands in opposition to the Temple of the Five in Solace. It represents the citizens' right to believe what they wish. It also hosts the Senate.   Grand Harbour A large deep-water harbour. The busiest in the world. the neighborhoods surrounding it are seedy and vile, but provide the lifeblood of the city.   Aerarium The treasury of the republic.   Fountain of Fortuna A large fountain in the Grand Plaza. It is customary to toss a coin into the fountain for good fortune before making big decisions such as getting married, or making an important trade deal.   Castra The main fortress and barracks of Apex City. The military leadership of the Army and Navy have their headquarters here. The naval guns overlooking the harbour are installed here.   The Republican Academy This vast campus is the primary higher learning and research institution in Apex.

Situated on a large hill overlooking Apex Bay the city covers the entire hill. Its extensive ports are some of the largest in the world. Poorer people live near the ocean and river, while the rich merchants live in mansion on the Apex, the hill that dominated the city. At the very top of that hill stands the Palace of Freedom, a direct challenge to the Temple of the Five in Solace. The Palace is not nearly so large, but it is richly decorated with every precious metal known to man. Statues of Republican heroes and every former doge cover it. It hosts the Republic Senate, and government offices.
