Lands of Tarna
"The northern lands of the Duchy of Tarna are quite lovely. Plenty of gentle rolling hills and open fields. If you enjoy a more rural vista, you can't do better. That said most of the settlements are large farmsteads and fortresses built during the liberation. Casteel is pretty cosmopolitan, as you would expect for the seat of the Duchy. And you have the two towns, Spring Blossom and Gorgo's Crossing. They have a certain charm. But don't go looking for the latest fashions or cultural experiences. Most folk of quality go to Tarna to relax and get away from the frenzy of court life."
- Imperial Courtier
Geography
The bulk of the lands of Tarna are filled with open plains and rolling hills with rich soil perfect for agriculture. It makes the Duchy of Tarna as the breadbasket for the entire Empire of Theos.
Mountainous regions lie to the southwest and northeast of the lands. The southwest is blocked by the Tevich Mountains, a land ruled by giants and their kin. These mountains act as a border with the Grand Duchy of Kadmos. The mountains to the northeast are called the Bulwark range. The capital, Casteel lies in the foothills among the range, offering protection from nearly all sides.
The Tarna River flows from the snows in the Bulwark mountains and takes a journey into the heart of the Empire ending at the massive Lake Kasia. To the north is another river acting as a border with The Rift. The Ochre river flows from the Everwood and towards the sea after crossing into the Riftlands. Another river flows from snows in the Tevich mountains and saturating the lands in the west in front of the Everwood. This created the Skullmire Marsh , a place shunned by most of the Duchy's inhabitants.
One more unusual feature of the Lands of Tarna is the canyon extending from the northwest corner of the Bulwark range. It appears to have been made by a river that dried up long ago, possibly because of the Cataclysm. Carved deep into the earth, and littered with caves, the Shatterstone Canyon has a history of ill omen.
A cluster of jagged hills in the north are the source of a spring blessed by Dal. The town of Spring Blossom lies here surrounded by fields of flowers of nearly every type.
History
These lands were claimed during the Liberation of the North and have been part of the Empire of Theos since that time.
