Desalle - God of Law

"For the guided path helps us travel further and faster, it leads us past temptations and dangers. We shall find the guided path in every place no matter how the terrain challenges us. Desalle is our strength, she is not the rule maker she is the finder, tester and arbiter of law, her wisdom and guidance ensure our paths hold strong. We look to her to give us the might and power to give those who waver from the path our support and drag those who have left the path back to it.   We are not fools who bind others to our laws blindly, Desalle knows this is a terror. Desalle demands that we understand the rules of others, respect them where we can and challenge them only as we must. We will help them build courts, laws and uncorruptable systems. We will help them build a path for themselves. We will help them avoid our earlier mistakes. We will bring the tools of law to them and teach them how to use them."   Words of Judge Thoral, translating his view on the Mantra Desalle.
Desalle is the god of law on Reef, an aspect of her left a world where she had brought perfect law across the lands. Her sigil is that of a ????. She is a powerful god and popular across nearly all of Reef. Her popularity stems from her approach to law, which is to help codify and develop rules rather than impose her own interpretation of justice.  The vastly different cultures of Reef embraced this goal, and worship exploded after signing of The Pact and she is the patron of The Seer Senate as well as many other groups across Reef.

Structure

The clerics of Desalle are known as Lawyers by most, amongst themselves the junior ranks call themselves Barristers and Solicitors. Barristers are often seen as preachers, they go out to push the church's agenda, exceptionally gifted in how they speak, and argue their point. Solicitors focus on the church's established territory, helping arbitrate the laws of the cities of Reef, or seeking to expel corruption through nailing down evidence of wrongdoing. As they progress they may be promoted, eventually becoming a Judge. Judge's are expected to be ultimate deciders of law, they form the courts that enable legal battles between heavyweights such as Caspi and Rasht to be heard on even footing.    The highest possible rank is that of the High Court, this group of 5 judges are the most senior members and respected members of the church, their will and guidance is not just law but considered a divine edict.    The church has a militant arm as well, known as Baliffs and Reeves. The Baliffs are powerful knights, they are often tasked with enforcing judgements or collecting those who would avoid their day in court. Swelled by magical powers these knights work with other groups to achieve their goals and often take Reeves with them. Reeves are a police force, bound by clear rules and processes this group are more concerned with day to day support of the laws, or protection of the Baliffs and Lawyers. Reeves exist across Reef, Caspi and Rasht both use Reeves for enforcement in communal areas of their cities.

Culture

The internal culture is one of constant learning and challenge, it is said that a pair of Judges can argue for two days straight without pause. Those in the profession believe their strength comes from the ability to think critically and much of their training is a collection of lectures and challenging questions with no one answer. The establishment is also full of checks and processes designed to focus the mind and weed out the corrupt or unworthy. This makes the group intense and challenging, but once a part many find they are in exceptional company.

Public Agenda

The Courts of Desalle are in a constant state of refinement, they seek to support the courts of local groups and gather information and knowledge to help ensure all can get a fair hearing. The courts while pushing tools to create justice do also apply pressure to shape that justice, key among these are universal rights a previously alien concept that was bound into law by the Pact. The Solicitors often work hard to ensure that law is not being unjustly applied or enforced, Barristers are sent to explain the importance of imparitallity.
