Caspi

"This world's sun was setting as it did it shone through the splintered columns of Caspi. The shape of the city was picked out in detail with the structures that clung or were carved into each pillar cast in hard silhouttes. Between them floated small skiffs and between the closer pillars the occasional bridge or skyline. Bastion felt at home, he was finally getting back to his home city after months in the Moon Coral, which had as much civilization as could be found on one pillar and with only half the population.   His mission was important, so the ship he was on avoided the dour pillar of the Skull Burners on the edge of the city and pushed straight to the majesty of the Storm Pillar. Even at this distance, it was beautiful, a column of white opalescent material that glowed in the setting sun. The helix avenues that ran its length with their great windows let the sun pour through, highlighting the hanging gardens that spilled out of every opening. As the ship started to move through along the main avenue Bastion kept a watch on the dwarven guns, that lined the bases of the most jagged pillars. He was pleased to find them tracking him, even if it was a formality, the gunners knew him and his ship well he felt better knowing that standards were being upheld. Soon he would deliver his knews and then he could relax into everything the city had to offer."

Summary

Caspi is built across hundreds of pillars of rock that float around the Storm Nail. With the Storm Nail's magical rain summoning properties sustaining the population, the hundreds of pillars, some vast and some no larger than a full galleon, have been harnessed for industry and homes. While the very first inhabitants lived and worked entirely within the vast floor space of the Storm Nail after the rapid expansion that the nation experienced people spread out, moving their factories out to the floating rocks around them.   The greatest players in this are the Guilds, these Guilds are large organisations, focusing on some element of industry. While at first, each Guild resided on just one rock many have diversified and now some pillars are entirely Guild owned and others are a mishmash of different guilds, bringing their industries together at their natural intersections. These rocks hang in the air as if held by some great force, they don't move they don't spin they just are. The first rocks and most valuable were those with large flat surfaces on which to build. Over time those were filled and the taller pillars on whose sides could be hung homes and businesses were expanded onto.   Over time all the rocks of Caspi have been claimed and converted to a greater or lesser degree, however some of the most difficult was the jagged broken rocks, who sat below the more complete pillars. Often seen as uninhabitable, the hard stone and sharp angles defied colonisation till the arrival of the Dwarves of the Inventors Guild, fleeing their homeworld, they were invited to set up and take ownership of these pillars, and they did with gusto, creating The Hanging Hold.
