Crown

That was a fucking Crown you tried to rob Nev! The fuck were you thinking. I know I know your hand hurts but I was doing you a favour stabbing it. You still don't fucking get it do you? Look it's simple that's a Crown, you know head of a Pillar, ruler of thousands. And you just tried to do 'An Old Susan' for her shitting wallet! You might've heard stories but I'm going to nail it to you, its not fairie stories it's the real deal.   None in all of Caspi are so powerful as the Crowns, these are the heads of one of the great pillars of Caspi. If you meet a Crown know that they got more vicious cunning in one finger than you have in your whole sad skin. You got two types, the Guild Crowns are the greatest of the Guild Experts, their not just the smartest and smoothest of that swotted up bunch, they are the ones who do all of that, and have the mind to keep a thousand plus people in check, you can't keep a dog for more than day Nev. Then their's the Free Crowns, they're most often razor sharp geniuses you'll ever meet, occasionally the true heir to the parents, but more often an adopted apprentice to their masters. Those buggers run businesses, you know pulling a bit on all the different guilds to run the empires of the docks or the steam works. To be a Crown you need to have a knife proof back or have the eyes on a permanent swivel to watch all the other pillars to keep ahead of the chaos that comes from having guilds that constantly invent or find or summon new shit. Plus theirs that keeping your own pillar, fed watered and protected, all the while collecting enough money and power to stay ahead of all the other buggers who want your job.   Nev I know you came from Rasht way, don't hold it against you but here's a way to understand what a colossal fuck up me stabbing you just avoided. I heard that Crowns are why the Corsair Kings no longer piss about with first born sons, when you got competition like them you can't just be giving out your power to whoever pops out first, you need to pick the best. The result is that the elite we've got, they're a collection of us, not just the fattest and wealthiest, but the most saavy, most dangerous and most perceptive we've got. You step into that ring with just a silver spoon in your mouth you'll have your pillar carved up into four guilds by the time it comes out your arse.

Appointment

Crowns are most often elected by guilds, for Guilds that control whole Pillars, such as the Mercenary Guild of the Blade and shield bastion that Crown represents the guild itself. Most Pillars have more than one guild, in that case, the Crown is elected by the consent of the guilds from within the ranks of the Guild Experts and is expected to neutrally represent the combined interests of the guilds. Many who ascend to this position have been members of the different guilds they represent and command the knowledge of the competing needs of their home guilds.   Finally a handful of 'Free' Crown positions exist, these few members are representatives of some of the larger populations of Reef who hold no specific allegiance to a guild. Most run businesses that pull on the expertise of different guilds, others focus on large labour forces that remain unaligned and can be swung in to support guilds where and when necessary. Those who hold these positions tend to be fabulously wealthy. With this wealth, the question of inheritance is at play, unlike the Corsairs who prefer to focus on bloodlines most follow a practice of adopting an heir from their Pillar to continue on their legacy, though for some businesses their exists boards who vote on the Crown and the Crown may be removed if the business underperforms.

Responsibilities

Crowns are expected to meet with The Guild Authority to make decisions on the future of Reef, they are also expected to help support the interests of their Pillar in general, weighing up the combined interests of its citizens. The Crowns are also expected to answer to The Seer Senate if their citizens break serious tenants of The Pact and to also disseminate the laws that the Senate passes down to them.
